Popular Post saltbox
This is the last of the regular production cigars from the Christmas sampler for me. Given that I'm unlikely to buy any boxes of the remaining cigars (H. Upmann Propios, Montecristo Supremos, Quai d'Orsay Senadores) I'm on the fence about whether to try them now or give them a year to hopefully improve with age. Stored at 62RH for 2.5 months, 6 months of age based on box code. Excited to try my second Cohiba after the Cohiba Robusto from the sampler, of which my sample didn't seem to do Cohiba justice. First third: Opens straight away into a nice mix of cream, hay, grass, and cedar. After a few puffs, some milky watered down coffee appears on the finish. Not a light coffee flavor, but very specifically a watered down coffee. As the burn line progresses the coffee gets richer and milkier and becomes the primary flavor note, accompanied by the previous cedar, hay, and honey, with the addition of some butteriness on the finish. One or two puffs have really strong bursts of the aroma of freshly cut grass, but it's not persistent and stops appearing by the end of this third. Middle third: Milk coffee, cream, cedar, honey, hay. Not much evolution here, just more of the same. A bit of tunneling and the cigar goes out halfway through despite no issues with the draw or burn line, but once the cigar is lit again it smokes just fine for the rest. Last third: The cedar begins to take over and become the most prominent flavor, as the coffee becomes darker. Still have the cream, hay, and honey on the background. Ended up taking this one all the way down. Overall: Excited to see how these age given how well this particular cigar smoked at 6 months, and how much improvement they supposedly see around the 5 year mark. 91/100 I didn't really compare scores previously, but now looking at this rank ordered list, I feel pretty good about it. The Romeo y Julieta Churchill really was the one that wowed me the most, unexpectedly. The CoRo and Monte 2 were dinged for burn/construction issues and showed signs of youth. The QdO 54 didn't have any problems with it, the flavor profile just wasn't particularly exciting. RDB
Thanks @philipl for this interesting and honest set of reviews. In some ways it’s no surprise to see RyJ Churchill, Lusitania and BBF come out well. I don’t think any of the ‘specials’ are objectively better than good examples of classic regular production - just different. I do think you’ve given all these smokes a hard challenge though! All are very young, recently travelled, and I believe smoked in cold outdoor conditions. That’s pretty demanding. Some age would probably mellow out the Cohibas, and perhaps help with burn issues on some others. And mild conditions always bring out more flavour. Thanks again for putting this together, and happy smoking in 2021.
