Popular Post GVan
Unfortunately, another rainy evening in Southern Florida (seeing a trend in my reviews lately)! It's cool outside 68 deg's F. and 75% humidity -- probably to high humidity for a good cuban so I decide on the Oliva V Lancero. These are 7" x 38 RG and were the #6 cigar of 2019 in Cigar Aficionado. This one has been in the humidor at 63% rH for 11 months. Smoked quite a few of these and they've been very good; this is the second to last one in the box of 36. Received my FOH stand today in the mail - many thanks to @El Presidente for the gift. I've been jealous of all the CC pic's displayed here in FOH with the stand so pardon all the pictures of me finally keeping up with the crowd. This Lancero has a very firm feel, a very dark colorado wrapper, very small veins and beautiful construction. At CD I get a slight sweetness and the smell of capsicum. As expected it has a tight draw so I V-cut it. The first draws are really smooth producing prodigious amounts of light grey smoke. In the first inch I get leather and poblano pepper. Like all skinny's, I sip this just like I'm smoking a PLMC. Like most Oliva V's this one is medium-full in strength. As we get to the half way point, the cigar picks up in strength and its mostly leather and light black pepper. The burn has been perfect with no touch-ups. Unfortunately, it stays leather and pepper for the remainder of the cigar - rather one dimensional. Other examples from out of this box I've gotten nutmeg and almonds but not here. As I reach the rather large band I lose interest and let it go out. Total smoking time was 62 minutes but there was at least another 15 to 20 minutes left if it had been worth it. Price / Value = 7 points - I like skinny's & got these at a little over $6. Construction / CD / Pre-light Smell = 12 points - very good start. Burn Consistency = 19 points - almost perfect burn. Flavors = 24 points - Leather, Poblano & Light Pepper. Complexity = 14 points - good but not very complex. Rating: 76 points - might have been the high humidity outside but I expected more from this cigar.
