Silverstix
I received this cigar as part of the prize for the “Mine Your P’s and Q’s” review competition. This is my first ever Diplomaticos and I’m curious to see how it goes. It’s most likely a 2019 single. It is a great looking cigar for sure, with a nice oily and mottled wrapper. Feels solidly filled. A short clip of the torpedo cap and the draw is good. Not much aroma at cold, and not much to speak of on the cold draw. 1/3 Starts off very mild and nondescript. Pleasant toasty aroma off the foot, but taste wise there is nothing going on that is getting my attention. There are some faint savory notes but otherwise it is a mild and inoffensive profile. 2/3 begins with more of the same, I find myself wondering what all the hype is about and if this is all this cigar has to offer. As I get to the halfway point, the flavors start to increase in intensity but it is still not very complex at all. Those savory and umami type of notes are predominant, a little bit of “funk” on the finish that’s tough to describe. Reminds me a bit of a Davidoff with that mushroom vibe that comes from the Dominican Olor tobacco. 3/3 sees nothing much changing in the flavor department except a bit more of an increase in the intensity of the savory notes. Barely touches medium bodied by the end of the smoke. Kind of disappointed since I know these sell quick and get very high praise. Maybe it’s the youth, maybe it’s my palette just not connecting with this profile. Maybe it’s a dud. The construction is absolutely terrific, and it’s not an unpleasant cigar. Just not something I’d see myself going out of my way to smoke when there are so many other great choices out there.
