I've seen many in my area recently avail and always thought it was strange to be copper lined.

It’s not that strange to line with copper, creepy crawleys don’t like copper. My guess is the lining is to ward off beetles.

My understanding (courtesy of the late Simon Chase) is that in the pre-revolution days cigars could actually be purchased in cabinets like some of those pictures above, and they would be shipped with the cigars in special boxes labelled "cabinet selection" (as in a selection for the cabinet humidors). The word cabinet has stuck with us and the meaning adapted. One modern exception would be the Hunters & Frankau 225th Anniversary humidors, which came with four cabs of the cigar inside just like they used to.
