Huber Alfonso García, deputy director of the Cienfuegos Gathering, Processing and Twisting Company, told the Cuban News Agency that historically the planting of this leaf is carried out in the only mountainous municipality of Cumanayagua, where an infrastructure of the process and there is a tobacco tradition. He said that now other towns such as Palmira, Lajas, Abreus, Rodas and Cienfuegos are joining this production this time, so they are preparing for the sowing campaign scheduled to begin in October of this year. He explained that they already train new producers to whom the manual was delivered with the requirements in the preparation of land, the selection of the seed and the tasks to be carried out in cultivation and harvesting. Alfonso García added that they are now also undertaking the construction of the rooms, consisting of warehouses for the shelter and cure of the tobacco to be harvested. In the province we will plant 100 hectares (ha), 70 of these in Cumanayagua and 30 in the rest of the territory, using the covered tobacco technique, as well as with the so-called “del sol palo”, he said. He assured the existence in Cienfuegos territory of good lands for this crop, especially in Abreus where they have already contracted over 20 ha. Yosvany Rodríguez Suárez, director of the Tabaco Tapado Select Base Business Unit, added that the current harvest is being faced by 47 individual producers throughout the province, of which 42 reside in Cumanayagua. These farmers mostly carry out cultivation using the tobacco-covered methodology, which uses irrigation systems, and the most widely used varieties are Criollo 98 and Criollo 2010, the latter more resistant. Among the leading producers in the province of Cienfuegos, he mentioned Inaudy Gómez Pérez, José Inocente and Fidel López Rodríguez. He highlighted Alcides Hernández Pérez as the farmer with the highest volume of contribution in layers and with great quality of the aromatic leaf grown on the El Porvenir farm. On a visit to that farm, Hernández Pérez confirmed that he planted five hectares and harvested about nine tons in the harvest that concludes these days.
