It is highly unlikely there would ever be a cigar branded Opus X that is not Dominican.

Why not? Fuente began in NIcaragua, they only left because of the Sandinistas. If anything it would make sense to make a "Fuil circle" "Returning to roots" kind of special Opus blend.

My understanding is the way they view Opus X was a project specifically aimed to produce a top tier Dominican puro, which really had not been done at the time (i.e. with Dominican wrapper). It isn’t a “single vineyard” brand per se but in my mind the whole purpose behind Opus X was being a Dominican puro that is largely constructed with tobacco grown within a fairly defined area. In my mind if you produce an Opus X that isn’t made from Cibao/Bonao tobacco it isn’t an Opus X. Like a Laphroaig made in Kentucky. Just my personal view. Carlito might disagree but don’t think so.

I don't think so, or at least entirely.  Fuente has plenty of options to make money if that was the only intention.  Bespoke brands have to look after the long ball.  It's very hard to right a ship once once a brand is not perceived as it once was.

Don't think he is quitting the DR but feel it has reached its limits. He's just expanding his lines. Nicaragua is growing at a faster rate than the DR for farms/factories. For starters in the DR there is no running water/electricity 24 hrs a day unless you have power plants. Nicaragua is just more economically feasible, more industrialized.
