Popular Post Rhinoww Posted October 22, 2019 Popular Post Posted October 22, 2019 Partagas short PUS MAY 18 There are indeed times when a cigar is a perfect match for an event. Sometimes that match is on a few levels. For me, that happened for this review. The call for the Cigar/Car review came just as the leaves are starting to turn where I live. It is unfortunately time to start to get my decompression chamber of a convertible ready for the long rest of trickle charging over the winter. The first step is an oil change. Hmm, as many of you do, I wandered over to my humidor and poked around for the right cigar. Not surprisingly, it was the Partagas Short. Why the perfect cigar you ask. Many reasons. It lasts about as long as it will take me to change the oil (the vacuum pump that I use to pull the oil out takes a while and allows some time for supervision). The cigar itself is a flavor powerhouse that never disappoints. The cigar is a harbinger of the coming winter – and those shorter cigars one smokes outside trying very hard not to shiver when it is particularly cold. And they always just taste great. There are also quite a few parallels between the cigar and my 1984 Mercedes 380sl. First, both the Short and 380sl are incredibly reliable. The car always starts and it never breaks down, much like the Short never tastes like a turd. The 380sl is part of the R107 body style (the 450sl was its predecessor with a larger engine and the 560sl was its successor also with a larger engine, but the car otherwise remained unchanged). The R107 was produced from the early 70’s through 1989. There were hundreds of thousands of these cars made. Much like the large production numbers of the short, both are readily available and thoroughly enjoyed by those that own them. Neither is a particularly expensive item, but both are in many wide ranging collections and both are cherished by their owners. So a nice pairing for my oil change. Got the extraction underway Then lit the Short as a reward First draw, like it always is, so full of flavor. Not a touch of bitterness. A nice tight roll, although some would complain of a slightly hard draw, I am a fan of the tighter rolls on the smaller cigars. The flavors include a touch of leather. There is a slight dryness to the first third, but only a bit and it passed rather quickly. An almost delicate taste for the first third of a Short, but still a treat. Second Third was smooth like Barry White on the cassette deck driving with the top down on a fall day with a lovely lady in the passenger seat of my car. Just smoooooooth. The flavors develop a bit but nothing stands out beyond a bit of dryness, like a red wine opening up. Classic Short flavoring all the way. Final Third, ah the best part. A meandering country road with no traffic. Pepper and spice appear. Delightful and satisfying. Smoked the cigar down to the nub. The flavor and the tingle linger on my taste buds for a long time. The 8.5 quarts of dirty oil have now been extracted through the small tube, so back to work on the car. Car will get washed in a week or two, trickle charger will be attached by early November, and I’ll be smoking a lot more of these Shorts as winter comes on. 8
