Ken Gargett Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 one of our new members (rumrogue) has given me an idea for discussion - which seems appropriate for this site. best (and worst) rums. i've just lined up a dozen and a half for a sunday morning tasting (yes, tough job and someone has to etc etc...). for a lighter style, the appleton special (tho i have never seen it in aust) is terrific and i have been going thru a bit of that. from cuba, the caney oro (originally recommended by hamlet of r&j, whom i know is friends with a number of members of the forum) is another cracker. but nothing comes close to the santiago extra anejo. they say that they only made 12,000 bottles and charge a fortune but it is worth it. if you are in havana, do yourself a huge favour and grab what you can find. it is like cream.
Guest Sailor Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 Now what would a Sailor know about Rum? Barbados. Mount ***, a standard by which others are judged. Puerto Rico, Bacardi Select, dark, sweet, great in a Cuba Libre. Santa Domingo, Barboncourt Five Star, serious sipping straight. Cuba, Havana Club Seven, straight or in a Mojito. Guyana, Lemon Heart, MUCH better than Pussers, Black Seal etc. Guatamala, Monticristo 12, there might be a better one but I have yet to find it. As with so many other things, it is all a matter of taste. Drink what ya like, like what ya drink. Cheers, Sailor
Boxboy Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 I tend to favor Pyrat XO and Pyrat Cask 23. Ron Zacapa Centenario ain't bad, neither! Chris
pj Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 Ken I just happen to be on Caniapa (45ft boat) on Sunday Morning at the Gold coast, moored only 2km from your place, I have heard rum tastes better whilst kicking back and wetting a fishing Line on a boat. Would you like to try this theory as well, I will bait your hook if you pour the rums. Captain PJ
El Presidente Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 PJ Ken is a Fly Fisherman.....you will however need to cast for him :-D As easy drinking rums I prefer Santiago and Caney + Havana Club 7 years.
jjwright Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Havana Club 7 year old Ron Zacapa Centenario Goslings Black
rd123456789 Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 » Guatamala, Monticristo 12, there might be a better one but I have yet to » find it. The best sipping rums comes from Guatamala, IMO, and #1 Zaya... a must try. #2 is Ron Zacapa Centenario. When I want something to put on rocks, Havana Club 7. A more oaky taste than the other two.
ALB Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 I'm a big fan of Caribbean rum. For quantity, Mount *** is a good drop to have lots of. For quality, Cockspur VSOP Limited Edition Gary Sobers was an Xmas gift I received in Barbados last year, & it is a very smooth libation. The best however is the El Dorado (15 years) from Guyana, which even the Bajan folks agree is the best rum around (which was a bit like Cubans saying Dominicans make better cigars).:-D Its superb straight or on the rocks, & even better when accompanied with a smoke with some depth & power (Part. Ser. D # 4 & HDM LE piramides are 2 rippers). Havana club is also a fav. in the Mojitos, it just tastes better than Bacardi.
ilikecigars Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 cruzan single barrel rum.....tastes link a single malt scotch.. el dorado...is yummy.. i actually prefer the anejo reserve 5 yr. old havana rum over the hc 7 and the 15 yr. old is out of this world also.
habanablue Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 Havana Club Rum available in Havana Bodegas and corner stores for US$3 (before 10% surcharge etc) or US $5 at duty free airport...How's that for a duty free savings!!!!!
skindiver Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 » Havana Club Rum available in Havana Bodegas and corner stores for US$3 » (before 10% surcharge etc) or US $5 at duty free airport...How's that for » a duty free savings!!!!! No mention of Bundaberg OP here? LOL It'll get you there quicker. The Caney Oro Ligero that Ken mentioned is a favorite of mine. The best Cuban, though, has to be La Vigia 44 yrs old now.$55 a bottle in Cuba. BTW, Hello Ken! Figured I'd see what you are up to over here!
Ken Gargett Posted June 14, 2005 Author Posted June 14, 2005 hi stan finally getting to catch up with some of these threads and still got to head back your way, though probably not for a bit - must try that one when next there. if it is as good as the santiago extra anejo (just brilliant) then i want some. and it is almost half the price.
Curmudgeon Posted June 14, 2005 Posted June 14, 2005 » The best sipping rums comes from Guatamala, IMO, and #1 Zaya... a must » try. I'm mostly a bourbon drinker, but this is the best rum I've tried. It's quite a sweet, full-bodied rum.

You won't be disappointed in the La Vigia. It is 40 year old stuff! Like a fine cognac, but sweeter.
El Presidente Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 Stan. Bundaberg Rum is Australia's top selling spirit. I keep a bottle in the medical kit in case of snakebite. It will kill anything it touches and can only be drunk when diluted with coke or Ginger ale. The marketing line for the spirit shoul be: Bundaberg Rum....there's a fight in every bottle. Pure unadulterated hooligan juice
mr.harten Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Great Post! I have been wanting to ask this question for a while and now I don't have to. :-)
JMH Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 How uncanny, I was looking for a thread like this last night, but only got around 640 hits into the 1100 that my search for 'rum' got me. I'm just starting my foray into the world of rum, and picked up a bottle of havana club anejo reserva on my way home this morning. Can any sydneysiders point me in the direction of a shop with a good selection of rums. thanks
Shooter Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Although I haven't tried anywhere near as many as others I have to say that the Ron Zacapa Centennario is outstanding! I'm going after some of the others now that I read all this! My liver will thank you later!
genevapics Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Has anyone tried a 15 year old Haitian rum called Barbancourt? A friend mentioned this rum to me and I had never heard of it.
CIGARHead Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 » Has anyone tried a 15 year old Haitian rum called Barbancourt? A friend » mentioned this rum to me and I had never heard of it. The Rhum Barbancourt Reserve du Domaine 15yr is a very good rum. Dubbed "the cognac of rums". Always keep some Barbancourt 'round the old bar. Perfect on the rocks or with a splash of O.J.
Taino Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Flor de Caña from Nicaragua, 7, 12 or 21 (depending on your budget) all great rums still not very well known for the general public.
billyburg Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 » » Has anyone tried a 15 year old Haitian rum called Barbancourt? A friend » » mentioned this rum to me and I had never heard of it. » » Never had the 15 but I drink the 4 and 8 yr. reguraly. Right now the 8yr. is on sale for the price of the 4yr. Never had any Havana Club but only hear great things about it.
Maverick Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 Another Forum member gave me a fantastic rum. It is called Pusser's Rum. I am not usually a rum drinker but this stuff is magic. I really enjoyed it, very unique flavour. If you can get your hands on some give it a go, I found one bottleshop in brisbane that sells is for abou $70AUS. And for those that like stuff that has won awards Pusser's Navy Rum has won Gold Medals in international wine and spirits festivals. Any other members tried it? Ross...
