Popular Post ChanceSchmerr Posted April 24, 2019 Popular Post Posted April 24, 2019 Hi Everyone! Well, we've been a little busy at sea here, and even during the last port visit, so I havn't been too active on the site. Part of that has been our operations, and part has been the inevitable year-end evaluations that we've been going through the last month - no escape from those! In any case - a big shoutout to Leif (@SokaKiel) - we were able to link up in the Seychelles and enjoy some great cigars and great food over a couple of days! Thanks again for a great time mate! I have a good picture but it's on my phone and I havn't been able to upload onto my work computer, I'll try to get it up here shortly! Leif was kind enough to share some recent middle-eastern RE's, so i got to try the Diplomaticos Ammunition and Ramon Allones La Palmera, very glad to have had the experience. I will say that the Dip Ammo, despite the large size, was a very tasty smoke, I will be looking for those in the middle east. I hope you enjoyed the cigars I gave in return, mate! Since our Seychelles meeting in late March, my ship sailed up the African coast and later made port in Salalah, Oman. This was a busy port for me but I managed to get out for a look around town. No cigar stores or lounges that I could see, but the town itself had a fun old Souq down near the Sultan's palace, where I was able to haggle for some Frankincense resin and oil. I also enjoyed some good food, including Camel meat! Tasty stuff - I love to try local delicacies when i can. I do manage to have a few cigars at sea when i have a moment. It's been busy with those evaluations but once I finished writing those, I celebrated with a few heavy-weights - one of my last 2002 RA 898s, and Montecristo Sublimes LE 2008. The Sublimes was decent, but the 898 satisfied like few other cigars can. A winner every time! Yesterday we sailed in consort with the French Aircraft Carrier Charles De Gaulle, and I enjoyed a Toscano cigar as I watched the jets take off from her flight deck. A very cool experience that I had not seen close up before. Next up is Muscat, Oman! I am very excited for this port, as it has the first LCDH i've seen since Singapore, as well as a proper cigar lounge to boot. I can't wait! Looking forward to relaxing with a cigar and a coffee in comfortable surroundings. I'm also keen to go to the Mutrah Souq, I'm told it's a good shopping experience and I need a bit more Frankincense to bring home with me. Anyone have any recommendations for food/restaurants, shopping and cigars in Muscat? Anyone actually in Muscat and keen to meet up for a cigar? Post or drop me a PM, I'm always open to meet up! Pictures to follow! Cheers all! 9 1

I hope you're keeping well, mate!
SokaKiel Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 Hey Chris, hope you’re enjoying your time in Oman! I’m currently in Spain, arrived inn Mallorca yesterday. Finally the sun is out again, spring is in full swing but the evenings still get a bit chilly. Today I had time to kick back, relax and enjoy the RA Canada ER that you gifted me when we met last in the Seychelles. Love the format, tons of smoke but well rounded with the age on it! Thanks again! Smooth sailing for you! Let me know when you head to Japan, I don’t know when I get back but I might be around when you get there! 1

Super Ramon is a really great cigar - The size is big without being unwieldy, and the blend was done really well. That, and everything is better in Majorca Thank you, I will let you know the details, the plan is almost firmed up now!

Moe, if I could I would mate! I was very much hoping for a Bahrain port visit but it never materialized. I even brought my Bahraini Dinars with me! I do have my couple of nights in Dubai coming up - think you could hop over for a cigar? LOL!
ChanceSchmerr Posted April 29, 2019 Author Posted April 29, 2019 A very nice time in Muscat! I did some more Middle Eastern Souq shopping for Frankincense, enjoyed my haggling experiences for various items, and made my way to the LCDH Muscat. Not bad as LCDHs go, with a good selection of regular production and a few LCDH and LE cigars. I was disappointed to not find any aged or rare cigars at all, nor any RE's save for some Bolivar Emirati RE '15s. That said - I bought one of the Emiratis and was pleasantly surprised how much these have come on - if you have a box, give one a sample, they are very good now! Prices were a little higher than I expected as well. In any case, fingers crossed for better pickings in Dubai! I also tried a LGC Inmensa from the store, havn't had one in a long while, and it was decent. Nothing to write home about too much. The star of my visit was one I brought myself - my one and only 1998 Trinidad Fundadores Original Release, from a trade way back when with @khomeinist. I have been saving it for a long while and I brought it with me on this trip to smoke at an opportune time, and I was not disappointed. A remarkably complex and flavourful journey with that cigar. 21 years and it hasn't lost a step. Phenomenal. Thanks again, mate! Now back to sea, with Dubai in my future....can't wait! 3
Philski Posted April 29, 2019 Posted April 29, 2019 Ah, what a lovely part of the world. My father worked for the Royal Oman Police, flying helis out of Seeb, from 1980 - 95; many many happy school holidays spent on the SAF (Sultan's Armed Forces) beach in the '80s, sailing our guts out on Hobies every day. My brother took his family there a couple of years ago, said it was nearly unrecognisable since we were last there. Clear memories of the labyrinthine souk, the Corniche, the old Portuguese forts and the ancient graffiti, and the beautiful and gentle people. CANNOT understand the attraction of Dubai, with this gem so nearby. 1

I really want to see the Grand Prix and the new Louvre there. But I have yet to venture out of Dubai

Feels like forever since i took a small boat out sailing! To be clear - I did enjoy both Omani port visits, Muscat was a great experience that I'd gladly do again. The only thing I think Dubai has up on it is the selection of cigars at the LCDH! 1

If it's thrills and spills you're after, Oman might be a bit too quiet for you
