Partagas D6
X
Galway Pipe 12YO Tawny

D6 sample from UEB AGO 17 is great! Dark Colorado with a slight sheen at certain angles! D6s are on the expensive side yes, so I take slower puffs and prolong the experience up to around 45mins. The thickness and construction means I still only ever need one light plus maybe a few OCD driven touch ups.

Galway pipe is just pure decadence. From the pour there is viscosity, and the rich, deep dark oaky amber.... very different from the cheaper ‘Ruby’ or even 8-10 year old stuffs which are deep red hued. For me Australian Tawny fortified wines are the best in the world, and I do collect quite a fair bit of Vintage Ports and Colheitas. While Portugal does ‘tawny port’ as well, they’re far far below what Australian tawnies bring to the table, IMHO / YMMV.

First puff, Partagas spices, dry wood, dry grass. Light in body, very strange... not what I remembered these to be. Then immediately, the subsequent draws bring in some dried nuts and a hint of coffee while body immediately gravitates towards medium.

Sips of GP Tawny brings a whole lot of richness to the palate. A whole lot of dried fruits like plums, apricots, orange peel and raisins with core of dark oak and mahogany.

With every sip and puff, the combination is just sublime. I’m at loss for words really.

Second third (or like maybe second inch?) the cigars approaches medium-to-medium-full body and the flavors get deeper and darker. Nuts are more pronounced, toasted tobacco, Toasted dark wood, coffee, milk chocolatey almost Nutella like hints.

The mid-full body of the mid part of the D6 pairs really well with the full bodied GP Tawny. Right now I am in heaven, sampling cornucopia in a glass and in the smoke. Like a dried fruit and nuts platter served on some artisan small batch boutique handcrafted wooden board with brandy, all mashed up together.

Past midpoint of the D6, creaminess enters the foray. The creaminess encounters the sweet rich viscous texture of the port. At this point, I’m struggling. I can’t find my diapers so I wet myself. The oral orgasm is intolerable. This is completely rude. And I’ll end the review right here and put my notes down so there’s nothing else I need to do besides puffing and sipping.

Finns thoughts: Partagas D6 90-92 points. For the pairing with GP though this becomes a 96

Final smoke time: 45mins

Pro tip: If able to source a reddish hued RyJ Churchill (or short Churchill) prepare yourself for a choc + fruit explosion with the GP Tawny. Mostly fruit but there are some chocolates in the mix. For the sweet toothed smokers!

I'm a scotch whisky drinker but now I'm figuring I should be switching to this tawny port stuff!  Nice review

Tawny Port is good, preferably Australian. No I'm not from Australia but thus is my preference from experience.

I've never quite caught on with the scotch + cigar thing sadly. Cognac yes!

How long do you find that ports and tawnys last after being opened?  Even though they're fortified, they are still wine, and that's always given me pause about drinking them except in group settings.

Once open, they should last for about 3-5 months. Keep them refrigerated.

Then they turn cloudy.
