The beads will do that - mine sure do, likely because I add water rather quickly.  It doesn't add up to much detritus and the overall volume of beads has dropped very little over the last 8 years I've been using them.

As many have stated already in this thread they don't need as much water as you'd think. My beads are in nylon sacks and porous plastic tubes. I wet a paper towel with distilled water and wrap the containers. Place them in a zip top bag for around 12-18 hours and they are good to go. I've never had an issue using this method.
