Islandboy Posted October 7, 2017 Posted October 7, 2017 With this one, I’m now 10 sticks into a 50 cab. I smoked the first one ROTT about 4 months ago, and so far, it has been the most memorable. Surprising. And a bit disappointing. Let’s see what number 10 brings to the party. I admit that I made a beverage switch halfway thorough, as you can see in the photos. So the first half tasted a bit like red wine, and I definitely discerned a distinct beer component in the second. Done. Ok, I’ll try harder. The cigars in this cab aren’t the prettiest (blind buy drawback), but the draw was perfect, and the burn was admirable, requiring no input from me beyond breathing (and lighting, of course). Upon lighting I immediately get aromatic spices, and a bit of sweetness - molasses I think. The spices are cinnamon and other baking spices I can’t put my finger on. Nice. I’m also noticing aromatic spices on the underlying woodiness. I equate this with Sandalwood. Sandalwood is THE component that I notice to some degree in every CC, that aromatic Cuban twang that is absent from every NC I’ve had. This Punch Punch has it in spades, it’s quite intense. And enjoyable. Cinnamon ramps up, and there’s an unidentified floral element lingering in the background. Maybe it’s just the intensity of the aromatic spices combined, creating an ever-so-slight perfumy effect. By the time I get to the second half the floral element is gone, and all of the cinnamon, molasses and baking spices combined have noticeably smoothed out nicely. There is however, just a slight bitter note on the finish. Not liking that. It doesn’t stick around long, luckily. In the final third, I’m noticing a new taste. Hard to decipher. Nuttiness. Almond. Ooh, almond cookie. Yes! Chinese almond cookie. Made with molasses...with a ton of cinnamon, cooked in a wood fired oven fueled by sandalwood. An environmental disaster, I know. Sandalwood in the wild is the second most endangered wood on the planet. But it tastes so good. A couple of things it is not: Not creamy, not chocolaty (thankfully, I’m not a fan of chocolate in a cigar), and despite being quite spicy, it’s not peppery at all. This was a very good cigar, glad I have it in my arsenal. Aloha, Brad 3
PigFish Posted October 7, 2017 Posted October 7, 2017 ... interesting that you bring up sandalwood... Nice review... and I don't think that cigar is off-putting in appearance at all! Thanks for sharing! -the Pig
