I know the problem; smoke more just kidding!  Brush your choppers after each smoke.  I know that is a lot of work but hey

better to clean and keep the mouth clean then have to feel like shit after each smoke.  I keep tooth paste and brush in

my company car, at my company desk, and in personnel car and of course at home.  Yes alot of work but hey it is worth it.

When visiting the tooth doc I have had no change in color of teeth or gum issues.  Floss and brush and smoke until your hearts content.

Good luclkmate.

That is on the docket. I did brush and used mouthwash last night after smoking.

I would suggest seeing a gastroenterologist to rule out acid reflux (silent reflux doesn't show typical symptoms). Look it up. I've been dealing with major symptoms over a month after having to take an ambulance to the ER. Not something to ignore or self-diagnose. Smoking only exacerbates symptoms.

Do you generally have symptoms when you don't smoke?

Maybe just only smoke the good stuff like Behikes and rare ELs...? :D

When i stared smoking cigars, i used to have mouth problems (sores and especially sore throats) after. I had two physicians as friends who were into cigar smoking as well and they advised me to get a checkup but like the OP, the mouth problems disappeared after a few days without smoking. I thought i was done smoking cigars.

But being the stubborn b@stard that i am, i continued to do so and getting sore throats almost every week, i realized was i getting these problems when i smoke too fast and/or with smaller RG cigars (less than 40rg) & having the habit of doing double or triple puffs was making it worse.

What i did was to slow down with the smaller RG cigars and right after every session i'll gargle with salt water and now my sore throats and ulcers are greatly reduced.

I'll have to try the salt water. For me it happens no matter what size the cigar. The cigar last night was about 52-54rg and I ran a stopwatch, puffing every 60 seconds. Fairly certaing I didn't overheat the stick. I also only smoked half of it.

Well, today I woke up with no mouth sores, so that's progress. Just muted taste like yesterday......better than it was before!

I brushed my teeth 3 times and used alcohol based mouthwash 4 or 5 times, gargling it and such. I also took zinc and Vitamin C for good measure.

I can live with this, if it's just a matter of building a tolerance. Hopefully it continues on this path and clears up. Thanks for the help, folks.

your problem is clear like the blue sky: it's called lack of single malt disease. The good thing is it can be easily cured by ingestion of 2-3 ounces of single malt, the side effect can be headaches and maybe some wife issues, but you can always take a tylenol for the first one and take 2-3 more ounces for the second.

He's not self diagnosing. He's asking for a diagnosis from strangers on the Internet!  :P

Don't we all?? :D

Smoking will relax your lower sphincter on the esophagus, allowing gastric acid to flow upwards. When you're lying flat at night, the acid can travel into your mouth and cause the lesions. I'm not saying this is your issue, but just something to keep in mind... as chronic reflux can lead to cancer.

Congrats on your progress, hope you can work through this...it sounds like it really sucks!

I'm not a doctor or dentist but you should probably avoid the alcohol based mouthwash though.  That burning sensation can be fun, but it is probably not helping your cause!  I'd recommend giving the saltwater a go instead.

Nothing wrong asking questions on this forum.  If the questions have to do with cigars even all the more fun

then double down on the inquries and let the chips fall where they may.  Rob always states; It's only cigars gents,

only cigars.....

I am ENT surgeon from Finland.

The tobacco smoke irritates the mucous membrane of your mouth.

Do not use alcohol mouthwash! It will only irritate your mouth.

Alcohol and sodas (containing carbonic acid) will also irritate so try to avoid.

Laryngopharyngeal reflux is something that you also might have. Alcohol, tobacco, coffee, chocolate and fatty food will make it worse.

Make an appointment to your local ENT doctor for more advice. He can prescribe you anti-reflux medication (for example Omeprazol).

You wouldn’t by any chance happen to be located in Helsinki?

Hi, I know it’s an old thread but as I’m facing similar issues, I must ask that how did everything end up with you? Did you ever find the reason for the irritation? When this happened, did you have a lot of stress in your life?

Hope you’re doing well now.
