Had an electrician in today to replace all my old halogen downlights (41 in total) with new LED ones. Good thing I did it, after seeing the condition of my halogen transformers. Some even caused scorch marks on the wooden ceiling beams.

Scary stuff right there. Methinks you dodged a disaster.

Was going to spend the day in the shop working on the '37, but my pal didn't open due to other obligations.  Left me free to harvest two truck loads of mesquite downed by a serious storm last weekend that left not less than 20 old growth mesquite and palo verde on the ground. Even as dry as it is here i doubt this will be ready before next fall, but it's a goodly amount. Very happy!

Also, pulled and cleaned the carbs from the old Lawn Boy and the relatively new leaf blower because neither would run.  The dust here is insane... All cleaned up now and they both run like scalded dogs...

AND I found a leftover 1/2 of a MPE in the ashtray on the back porch.  Finishing it off now.  Really have not been able to like these so right out of the humidor vs spending the night outside 1/2 smoked really hasn't made much of a difference for me.

Cut grass all morning. Been raining here in southwest Mississippi almost every day, and the grass is growing like I have never seen before in early August. Sitting on the back porch now, smoking a Monty #2 and sipping some nice rose'.
You Texas guys using that Mesquite in stick burners to smoke briskets?

I'm down for the count, now. Have had some shoulder issues that culminated while moving a chest o drawers upstairs. Can't even lift a long neck of Shiner at this point.

Probably best. You should be lifting a Lone Star anyways...

:ok:

Building doors and drawer fronts for my island to finish off my set of kitchen cabinets... really looking forward to finishing this project.

Also digging the base out for my future retaining wall, another massive undertaking that I'll be very excited to have complete.

Johnny

What's the name of the band and where are you playing?

Our band's name is Past Tense and we played at Hornsby Inn on Saturday night. We have some upcoming gigs later this year at Panania Hotel and Gymea Bay Hotel I believe. I'll let you know when those dates are confirmed.

Our lead singer, Anne also updates our website with information of gigs...

That is one diverse set list! Hope it goes well.

Played in club/pub bands for years until it started to clash too much with being off late from the day job, I do miss it, was hilarious fun. You cannot beat arriving somewhere on a Sunday afternoon to be told you are on before the bingo to deflate ones ideas of rock stardom ??

My last band was a Foo Fighters tribute act, probably the most fun I ever had with guitar in hand.  I now have a Gibbo Lee Paul and an Explorer sat doing nothing for the last 12 years or so, perhaps it's time to offload them and buy some more cigars ??

You are right about the set list being diverse. I've joined the band last year, and they already had a 'retro' covers set list going which appealed to me as it covered a wide range of musical styles. Ultimately, the band is about doing rock and pop classics that people dance to and reminisce over, so one-hit wonders and big Aussie Acts (AC/DC, Cold Chisel, Jimmy Barnes, Dragon, INXS and The Angels) are popular.

Actually, our set list was in place before I joined and the diversity of the songs has proved a problem with other members, we've had to let go two lead guitarists in the time I've joined. The first guy wanted to bring in his own songs which all suited his musical tastes, highlighted solos and he also wanted to dominate every rehearsal. At the end of the day, he wasn't good enough to play the diverse set list, hence why he wanted to do his own songs. Being an attention seeker, want-to-be band leader and lacking humility about his talents, I must say it was a relief to let this guy go. Not so the second guitarist, as he was a genuine person who loved Paul Kossoff of Free (and other 70's progressive free-form rock) and tried hard, but ultimately we gave him 3 months and he couldn't connect with our material. Personally, I wished he had. We had a third guitarist come in who has played this type of material for years, but due to his bad back and long job hours, he could only commit for gigs as a replacement. Still, he's very handy, the type of musician who only needs 2 rehearsals to go over 35 to 40 songs and he's ready...remarkable really. I wish he was with us full-time.

This gig went okay. We had a new lead guitarist who is a blues musician, he is a Hendrix fanatic and it shows in his playing. However, unlike some lead guitarists, this guy can play simple rhythm well when a song calls for it, and is willing to play clean as well as distorted tones. I love Hendrix myself, so it's a pleasure playing alongside him.

Our new guitarist chose some new songs for this week's rehearsal to learn from the band's established set-list, so I worked on them on Sunday. Can you believe I had to learn Abba's Waterloo and The Buggles' Video killed the Radio Star on piano, Pseudo Echo's cover of Funky Town on Synthesizer and Toni Basil's Mickey on Organ this weekend? But I consider myself very, very fortunate, as from a musician's point of view, I get to play lead guitar on songs like The Knack's My Sharona, Rolling Stones' Honky Tonk Women and The Beatles' I Saw Her Standing There, rhythm guitar on songs like the Black Crowe's Hard to Handle and Led Zeppelin's Rock and Roll and keyboards on a wide range of other songs, so it's a lot of fun and I feel I improve my skills with each new challenging song to learn.

If you don't mind, your kitchen dimensions, please? We're pretty wide, and I think we can accommodate an island, but the head chef feels otherwise.

My 4' x 7' island will set at the long side edge of my kitchen which opens up fully to the den area so it's a bit unique in arrangement when compared to the traditional island.

My kitchen is about 18' x 9'.

Oh the age old conundrum of playing in gigging bands is the fact, you absolutely have to, learn songs you might not even like.  Playing at dingy little Labour clubs in the NW of England taught me that years ago.  All I ever wanted to do was unleash a shit load of Deep Purple at the old biddies, when to them, a bit of Tom Jones was "out there".

Glad the gig went well, there is really is nothing more fun then playing live.
