I am considering a box of Epi #1s. However, I'm not really wanting a "very light" cigar and I'm reading mixed reviews on them. Some say they are REALLY light (much, much lighter than the Epi 2 - which I like). Other reviews say they are "Medium". I would be OK with "medium".

So, I thought I'd ask you guys to compare it to a Juan Lopez Sel. #1. I consider those to be very light cigars. I'm just finishing up a box of them so they are fresh on my mind. I want to replace my next box with something a bit stronger. How does the Epi #1 compare to that cigar?

Guilow: I am an Epi #1 smoker. Compared to the half dozen or so Juan Lopez #1 I have smoked, the HdM have more body, spice and complexity. I have both an '02 box and an '04 box. The older ones are milder, smoother, and more floral. A great morning or after lunch smoke. The younger ones are pretty spicy, and open with a bang. See Rob's review in the cigar section, it's spot on!

I prefer the Epi 1 to the JL Sel 1- have found them to be a more complex and flavorful smoke experience and a better constructed cigar.

the epi 1 is a great smoke and has the added bonus of being ready to smoke with no aging and rarely suffers from plugging

I just picked up a box from 05 - I've smoked 2 so far, and I would say definitely medium compared to the half-dozen or so JL#1's I've smoked. Very happy with these.

Epicure 1's are Medium and fuller than the Juan Lopez Seleccion No 1.

I enjoy both but for my flavour profile I prefer the JL S1 in part because our climate here is Stinking hot right now. A lighter complex cigar just works a little better IMHO. Get me into winter and no doubt i will change my mind.

I find that the JL1s are more subtle yet also more complex and refined than the Epi1s. To my palate, they also have a certain alluring sweet-savoury characteristic in the first half that the Epi1 lacks.
