I always find myself focusing the most when smoking a lancero, along with any cigar that's approx. $30 or more

Lanceros for me too. Always an enjoyable experience picking the flavours apart. Current favourite is the fundadores.

I smoked a Monte 4 (GEO MAR14) that blew me away.  Your post makes me wish I had devoted my full attention to it and tune everything else out.

A couple of cigars stand out in recent memory - A 2002 ERDM Tainos and a 2002 Punch Super Selection No. 2, both with ECA factory code. Those cigars grabbed my taste buds and seemed to shout directly into my brain... "NOW LISTEN UP BOY, PAY ATTENTION, AND DON'T THINK ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE"!  Another amazing smoke I had this past year was a 1999 Partagas Lonsdale (officially a Cervantes), it had such a unique and pleasing aroma, it was like aromatherapy. Cigars like these are few and far between, when that kind of magic happens, you have to stop everything and just let the senses take over and transport you to nirvana for as long as it takes. I'm a real sucker for Lonsdales and Coronas, their flavors seem so intense and direct. They have given me the most memorable smoking experiences of any cigar format.

I had that experience last night with a LUB OCT 14 Lusi. I had planned on getting some reading done. Nope!

I think there are several ways a cigar can draw one's attention. If the profile, or primary flavors are distinct and pleasant enough I just love fully concentrating on them and appreciating them. When a cigar knows what it wants to be and delivers, I love taking it in and appreciating that.

The other way is complexity. The more there is going on, the more one must focus to discern it. And if the cigar is subtly complex, like an aged ERDM CS can be, you really have to hunt for the things going on in there. This can be a good or bad thing. For me, I prefer not to have to ferret out the faint complexity and prefer to revel in a glorious primary profile.

The last cigar I personally had to focus on was a 2015 BCG. Good complexity, but you didn't have to search for it. The two or three dynamics going on were very present and balanced. I also smoked a brilliant SPNP with 3 or 4 years on it recently that drew my attention, although it was a bit less complex than it could have been. However the driftwood/saltiness and toasted tobacco were fully present, and I enjoyed focusing on those primary flavors.

I'm not talking in a bad way. I mean that cigar that makes you think "I need to slowwww this down/tune everything else out to fully appreciate everything."

Mine is the HdM Le Hoyo du Gourmet. This particular one is MUS March, 2013. Loads of creamy, sweet, floral goodness......I should put my computer away!

Never seen a Gourmet before, is that a Lancero? Looks like it.

Do you remember these because you took notes, saved the labels, or because they stayed on your mind forever?

Yeah, apparently they're not too widely available. It's a "Slim Panatela"(33 ring x 177 mm), so it's quite a bit thinner than a lancero. I've yet to get my hands on a CC lancero, though I am looking for a good deal on either CoLa or a Fundadores.

With cigars that stand out like that I make notes, I take pictures, and I try to write a review to memorialize it. I keep a mental file in my head of the best cigar experiences, but the review helps refresh my memory and let's me reminisce.

I have yet to find a CC that has had my attention taken in this manner. The NC that took me this way is the crowned heads Tennessee waltz. Not right out of the box mind you, this one had been in my humidor resting for a little over 2 years. Fresh these are a flavor powerhouse with so much going on that any novice would most likely not truly enjoy them. After their rest they take on a mellow demeanor. The flavors have blended and are so much in your face as they are subtleties behind a flavor of sweet earthy cocoa and some spices. I have been a cigar smoker for some 35 years and these became my favorite cigar whan they first came out. Now they are worlds better and have retaught me to, and I quote an old friend on this, "slow down you big dummy!"
