I've just read on Wikipedia that Waltzing Matilda is about a thieving tramp who steals a sheep and then commits suicide. 

We used to sing that as a child and all that came to mind was those funny aussies with their billabongs (whatever they were.)

As far as Australia's contribution to world culture, you gave us Mad Max (1&2,) Home and Away (wished I lived in Summer Bay as a teen,) INXS and one of the very best mountain biking videos ever made - Mud Cows.

yes, i doubt i have ever heard the original - a glaring omission, i confess - but i love the bruce version.
