I thought I knew about cigars enough to get around, but the entire view of what it actually means to sit down and have a smoke with a friend has completely changed over the last few weeks.

That's exactly how I felt. Even a proper cigar can be cost effective, delicious, and above what I would say to many of the guys within this form a "basic" cubano.
