GavLew79 Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 Just been watching the NFL UK game between the Giants and Rams. Got me thinking... Is it just me, or did the NFL of the 80s (my childhood) have the best quarterbacks ever. Was it a heyday or simply my childhood nostalgia? Joe Montana, Dan Marino, John Elway, Warren Moon, Wilson/Plunkett/Schroeder, Phil Simms, Boomer Esiason, Randall Cunningham, Jim McMahon (sp?). Dan Fouts! Jeez. Awesome.
Smoke6 Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 All great! You forgot Jim "Machine Gun" Kelly of the Buffalo Bills. Loved to watch that guy throw the long ones. What an arm. Too bad he never got a ring there, but he did have plenty of chances.

stogieluver Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 I grew up in the 60's and there were some great qb's then, also. Len Dawson, Joe Namath, John Unitas, Bart Starr, Ken Stabler, Roger Staubach, Fran Tarkenton, and then later in the 70's you had Dan Marino, Joe Montana, etc. The current crop, headlined by recent retirees Bret Favre and Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, etc are also amongst the best ever. 1
Fosgate Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 Yup, comes and goes. I remember when Roger Starbuck, Terry Bradshaw, Fran Tarkenton etc were all retiring and guys were asking the same thing. At the time some young guy named Joe Montana was drafted in 79 with little other promises in the day. Then the 82, 83 & 84 Drafts hit. Bringing in Jim Mcmahon, Elway, Boomer, Kelly, Marino etc. As a Denver fan it was awesome watching Elway's (The Drive) against the Browns and cemented in Denver fans to never leave a game until the whistle blows. Also even though many never knew it, Gary Kubiak was drafted to Denver at the same time and the two of them were essential in Denver's future success together and still are. I just wish we just had more of the bad azzes of the days past like Jack Lambert, Dick Butkus, Jack Tatum, Jim Brown, Dick "Night train" Lane, Mean Joe Green, Lyle Alzado, LT, Jack Youngblood (any guy that plays both the Superbowl and Pro Bowl is a bad ass.) etc. Sure my team had Romonowski for awhile, but when I was young I liked cringing at hits or you see players they go up against and hear the stories about how guys would just fear those individuals.
