guilow Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 The last couple of SD#4s boxes I've smoked have seemed pretty "medium" in strength. Those boxes were from late 04 / early 05. Anyone else think they are not quite as strong as they used to be? I year ago I smoked a couple of boxes on with 1-2 years of age on them and they were REALLY strong. Recent production seems a bit weaker to me. Thoughts?
habanohal Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I have only smoked 04. 05 boxes and never even thought they were close to being a power house. Mild..medium if that
Mel Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I'll have to check my stock but I believe I have some 03. I have SD4 in the 04-05 years and I have never considered them to strong. The more I smoke the milder they all become.
Colt45 Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I haven't had good luck with these at all. The few that I've had have been devoid of flavor of any kind. The consensus is that they were toatally shut down. Time will tell.
guilow Posted January 3, 2006 Author Posted January 3, 2006 When I converted to cuban cigars from non-cubans, I had read that the PSD4 was one of the stronger cuban cigars. Of course, if I read it on the internet it must be true, right? The first couple of boxes I tried were exactly that - strong. But I may have been mislead and just coincidentally hit a couple of strong boxes, not representative of the mild/medium strength profile that they really are. My partagas preference is the Corona which I think has a bit more strength an enhanced flavor. I'm certainly not bashing the PSD4 because I still think it is a fine cigar. I'm just revamping my expectations of it's profile.
Wiley Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Nicotine wise, the fresh ones I've had make me want to cry for my mommy.

El Presidente Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Habanohal. The feeling is one of whooziness and slight nausea. Happens very rarely. Partagas D4 in my mind is not a strong cigar varying from Medium to Full.
guilow Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 » The feeling is one of whooziness and slight nausea. Happens very rarely. I have only had this experience once - when I smoked an El Rico Habano (natural) corona gorda on an empty stomach.
habanohal Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 CAN say that I have never experianced this. "buzzed" the only time is if I hot box a cigerette 1st thing in the morning. The quesy stomack only happens if I get end of cigar to wet and happen to bite on it and swallow alot of juice filled with tar. But that just tastes like crud
Bunker1028 Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 I agree the strength factor has changed for this cigar. It still has that spicy, pepper characteristic, but the power has faded, imo. The only rub is that I haven;t smoked an aged one, so I can;t speak to any strength picking up as years pile on.
shrink Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 The PSD4 is my "go-to" cigar. I smoke more of them than any other Partagas, and I smoke more Partagas than any other marque... so I can't let this thread go by without a comment (or two!). I admit that I haven't smoked a PSD4 any older than March, 2004, and this is only because I age them myself. So I cannot comment on the "really" old Partagas, but I believe the old farts who say that they aren't what they were in the "old days", prior to 1998. What I know for sure is that after the "sick" period passes (in a year and a half or so), something truly amazing happens to these things. No, they aren't "stronger", whatever that means, but they sure are full-bodied, enormously flavorful, spicy, and full of nicotine. I never had one "kick my ass" or even give me much of a buzz. But I can say that my early '04's provide as much or more of everything that I smoke cigars for, compared to any other cigar. Young ones? Yeah, my '05's are peppery and a little "raw", but they are sweet and spicy, flavorful, and dey got dat tang what I luvs 'em for! My verdict? PSD4 still rules my roost. Hey Tampa, let's hear from the PSD4 King himself...
spsurfin Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 The PSD4'a I have smoked have been medium bodied and full flavored. I have not experienced the nicotine kick.
kab55 Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 The PSD4's that I've got from 98 are still a fairly strong flavorful smoke. Hven't tried any of the young ones though.
