La Gloria Cubana Medaille d`Or No. 2

Figured I would post a review of tonights cigar, go easy on me ;)

Aug 2007 Vintage

Pre light: Construction looks excellent, cigar is packed with tobacco, beautiful smooth wrapper. Could not ask for a better looking cigar, and this vitola feels great in the hand.

First third: Draw is a bit tight, smoke output is lighter than any previous #2 I have had. That being said, flavors are great. Creamy vanilla, with a hint of leather and tobacco. A bit of fruity floral notes on the retrohale, very smooth. Ash is a beautiful white and burn has been as perfect as you will ever see. Very very good so far, minus the slightly tight draw. Very mild.

Getting into the second third, draw issues persist, but nothing awful. The prior #2s I have had have been one pull cigars. This one needs a couple of puffs to get a solid pull of smoke, but this makes for a great burn so I can`t really complain too much. Still getting a bit of vanilla, but now also some roasted nuts and a bit of wood and more earthy tones are beginning to come through. Great transition, excellent flavor. Draw is beginning to improve a bit towards the end of the second third.

Beginning of the final third this one hits its stride. Strong vanilla and creme notes return, with some tobacco and roasted almond flavor coming in strong. Bit of leather also. Smoke is nice and thick, draw issues have subsided and this one has not needed a single touch up. Smoke output is getting closer to what I have experienced before with the #2. Very thick and heavy with each puff. Strong coffee and earthy tones have pushed out the sweet vanilla and creme, in the low medium range now. Final bit is more of the same, but it starts hitting a little harder. More tobacco and leather than before, and its finishing as a medium. Smoked it down just past the band, once the smoke started getting hot and a bit bitter I shut it down.

FINAL THOUGHTS: A very good to excellent cigar through the first ⅔ and solid at the end, but overall it just left a bit to be desired. I didnt get that "WOW.... what a cigar" feeling i have had with this one in the past. Still an outstanding cigar, but this is one that CAN be incredible.
