Can't speak to the exact codes you have for 08 but I can say I've got a box of #4's BLP Feb 08, and 2 out of 3 has been too tight (one was smokeable, the other had no chance and went straight back into the box).  The one well constructed example was splendid though...

The dark is personal preference but the oily is a universal bellwether.

Do you think they would still be oily after 6-8 years? I find that young cigars are sometimes oily, but after a few years at 65-68% RH the oils tend to crystalize and the wrappers have a leathery sheen as opposed to being oily. It could be just me I guess.

My thoughts are that a high % of the oil over time seeps into the binder and filler.

There are problem cigars in all years. Great cigars as well ;)

If you can't pick your aged box personally or you don't have a private seller/vendor whom will give you personal service in description/selection, then in cigars such as the Monte 4 where there is always plenty of rubbish, get a great recent production box.
