We came across We Chat in China. 700 million Downloads albeit predominantly Chinese use (70 million downloads outside of China).

I have downloaded it and will use it to stay in touch with my old and new Chinese friends as well as others.  Some very cool features including voice messaging and a Web Chat wallet that may prove useful down the track.

If you use it, let me know your experiences. It could be a handy FOH platform moving forward

I use it quite a lot with my family back in Malaysia and also with business contacts in China. Pretty good app with some interesting features (shake your phone to connect with random WeChat people near you). Also use WhatsApp.

On my father's side, yes. I go back every year of so to visit relatives. My bro is also working in Singapore.

WeChat for China, WhatsApp for Asia, Europe an Africa, Viber here and there and the "old" Skype.

Use a second phone with a separate phone book as most of these Apps have full access to your phone book.

@El Presidente you have hit the nail on the head with referring to wechat as a Platform. That's exactly what this simple chat app is evolving into. Think of the Internet as a platform where all the websites are apps within that platform or your iPhone as the platform and all the apps you download onto that platform.  Wechat are pioneering the next iteration of platforms with the ability to integrate many services into the chat environment. Next step is to allow third party integration (services, retail etc) directly into chat. Commonly referred to as chat bots. Facebook/Whatsapp, Apple & Google are all are moving in this direction and battling for market share for their chat platforms and online wallet systems to capture the full end to end lifecycle of chat, retail and transaction. Within China, Wechat is clear winner as per your stats the rest of the world is still up for grabs and still much more development to come.

While i find WeChat useful at times, i'd still rarely use it due to security concerns. As its a China company (no offence) i dont know what data they might or might not mine from my usage so i prefer to be safe.

So if you start running down the street with your phone in your pocket do you start to hear little voices saying hello what do you want.
