I think I have seen enough 2015 boxes now to make a call.

First quarter 2015 production was generally very good. A continuation of 2014. Second quarter 2015 across multiple lines has seen a significant drop off in wrapper quality. Still plenty of gems but holy hell there are a ton of average sticks. I would have opened 2000 boxes (2015) by this time.

Note: I am only talking about wrapper quality. Construction is fine. Just a lot of nondescript lifeless wrappers (flat/no sheen at all).

It really is the first time that I have noticed wrapper quality fall into a hole since the news of the poor wrapper crops in 2013 and 2014.

Decent season this year (14/15) crop so let's hope that it doesn't continue for too long into 2016/17.

I am also seeing a portion of wrapper on premium cigars that looks a lot like sun grown. I am not saying it is non Cuban (it is not), just sun grown. More than likely just a mistake my end but I haven't seen that particular variation before on premiums. .

Anyway, day two had it's highs and lows. Perhaps more lows today than highs which is disappointing. It is the nature of the game. Still, I am tapping this out with a bottle of wine and a Boli Tubos No 1 while waiting for Chris (Fuzz). Life is good spotlight.gif

My brother keeps telling me I don't need more. Sounds like I need more 14s.

In case you were wondering Di, I eventually arrived to make sure Rob didn't drink the whole bottle of wine on his own. tongue.png

And they asked me to help them Di...and being the kind-hearted soul I am, I obliged!

Bolivar Tubo No. 1's...definitely a surprise hit. Marzipan, a little cream, pepper, toasted tobacco perhaps. I must admit I was enamored by the range of flavours and the balance. Also, Bolivar is not a marca I gravitate to, but this was really pleasant.

Hopefully day three at the warehouse brings some good news akin to the H.Upmann Connoisseur A find on day one.

Wow Rob; you really do drink wine often with your cigars... Seems like everytime you smoke you are drinking a nice Italian wine. Guess I should give it a try! :-)

Rob,

Not to sound pedantic, just to clarity, you are referring to a financial quarter or a calendar quarter?

What is the difference in wrapper when it is sun grown? Excuse my ignorance. Darker and rougher?

Yes, sun grown wrappers tend to have larger veins to cope with the extra light. This means that the wrapper will not be as smooth and supple as shade wrappers.

Sun grown wrappers also tend to be darker and can be sweeter.

Is it similar or the same as a maduro wrapper or are they completely different?
