It hasn't got the legs to go the long term.....

I was smoking an 05 El Rey Del Mundo Choix Supreme on the weekend (one from my locker). Bang on 10 years so it piqued my interest.

As I am want to do I did a quick search of what happened in 2005 while lighting it up. .

Tiger Woods was the Number 1 golfer in the world, George W Bush was US president, The economy was purring through the first 3 quarters, the tragedy of hurricane Katrina.

I also looked back to my initial tasting notes of a fresh ERDMCX from this box and noted at the time

"Good wrapper and construction. Good aroma at cold. Light delicate flavours of cream, lemongrass, toasted tobacco. Gently building in body into the last third. Better out there. Smoke 2008-2009. It hasn't got the legs for the long term."

I have to say after read my notes....my hopes were not that high. It only took a few puffs to work out how wrong one can be. Immensely floral on the nose, super sweet honey/citrus/milk coffee notes that built well into the last third before finishing with a Jaffa (choc/orange confectionary) blast.

The ERDMCX never went past medium body (and that was only in the last inch) but was highly complex, and full flavoured. Couldn't fault it. 97.

For those that have been around for a while and have purchased boxes and boxes of cigars. You have no doubt heard or made the observation yourself of "hasn't got the legs for the long term".

Have you ever been stunned by a cigars transformation that you just really didn't expect?

Fill us in. Those moments are truly special ok.gif

Any secrets on storing for the long term that have given your sticks the best aging potential? I would love to apply any tips that may prove helpful down the road.

Choix Supreme is the biggest disappointment of a Cuban cigar I have ever smoked. Too bland, weak, I find myself puffing and puffing and just no flavor. Crap stick IMHO. I have a box of Bolivar RC's TEB08 that are fabulous and rival any Padron 64 or 26 in the refinement category. RASS is my fav and I would love to lay a box down for 10 years to see what happens but that is a hard thing to do

If I smoke a young cigar that didn't do it for me there usually is a reason that I figure out in the future. Most of the time the cigar "opens" up after a few years. You know what I mean? When it was young the draw might have been passable but just didn't have that effortless flow and the burn just wasn't as crisp as when aged. Double clutching, correcting the burn, etc... causes the overall grade of the cigar to be discounted. Flavors and overall enjoyment greatly increases when you don't have to think about anything but the smoke.

I had a similar experience with an ERdM CS from 09, bought two years ago as a simple single from a B&M store. Blew me away with sweet complexity and was the epiphany moment of "Wow, I need to buy boxes and start ageing". Until then, I was a singles man, and young cigars at that. Funnily enough, that one I rated 97 also!
