Why did you start smoking cigars?

Recommended Posts

I smoked cigars since I was a kid. I got in deep in the early 90's with a colleague. Shortly after I supported the profits of a patient who owned a smoke shop.

The occasional gift cuban always was a treat.

Came to FOH to invest in CC on a greater level.

I actually had a couple "Starts" into cigars.

I was a fairly good kid and didn't even think of smoking cigarettes in middle school but when I got to high school everyone was smoking! So I started with a minimal amount of cigarettes for a couple months and just hated them. So I decided to try "Dutch Masters" from the local grocery store. It wasn't nearly as acrid as the cigarettes but I realized they took up way to much time and they really sucked.

Later a friend got me into swisher sweets and Black and Milds. The better taste and shorter smoke got me going only when around a bonfire or outside for prolonged times.

I gave it all up during college until I worked with a guy at Best Buy who was also a cigar vendor rep at a local shop. He took me through the paces, got me a 20 count humidor and I bought about 15 sticks that day and enjoyed them a TON!

No one in college wanted to smoke with me so the humidor dried up along with a handful of sticks I had leftover.

When I had met my future wife and moved in with her, her dad was a cigar smoker (but he only bought cheap bundles and would smoke 5 a day) but it got me thinking about reviving that humidor! Unfortunately about a half year of poor Rh and neglect the wood was as warped as the cigars.

But invested in a 150count humidor from an online vendor, did a cigar of the month club and haven't looked back!

I started smoking cigars because... well... because they weren't very good as a salad topping.

Seriously, though, my Dad smoked cigars and it seemed to me like a very natural thing for a man to do when you grew up. Initially maybe a rite of passage, but I loved 'em!

(not that I have anything against women smoking them too)

During the cigar boom of the early 1990's everyone in Toronto ( where I used to live) was enjoying the hobby. I went to a few cigar bars with my friends and I easily became hooked. After a long while I gave it up. Then twelve years ago after the birth my first child I started getting back into this glorious pass time. No regrets.

My father introduced to the fine cuban leaf at 16 with a Montecristo no. 2. I have not stopped since. It makes for a wonderful hobby to share whenever I come home with bolivar petit coronas and hoyo de monterrey petit robustos in hand, his favourites.

I might've told the story before but... I'll tell it again. My father used to take me to cigar dinners in Atlantic City. We used to make the weekend of it. We would go down on a Saturday morning gamble in the casino maybe have a cigar. Then go back to the room dress up have a nice five course meal with three or more different cigars. Enjoy all different single malts. I would enjoy the company of people that enjoy life.
