Help with new storage solution ideas

Hey guys,

Finally finishing up a long journey with my sleeve tattoo, so that means more money for cigars!!!

I am currently working with a small tupperdor big enough for a few empty boxes in which I store singles.

I want to upgrade as my funds will be allocated to my other vice cigar.gif

I am torn between wanting a nice solution like a wineador and cost friendly solution like a coolerdor.

My main concerns with the windeador is that I have heard horror stories of condensation ruining thousands of dollars worth of stock. Also, I don't want to spend $250 on a wineador and run out of space. Plus extra money for nice cedar shelves and such..

The issue with a coolerdor basically comes down to cosmetics and limited access to stock. To access a box on the bottom I would have to remove a lot of boxes to get to it..

Please, if anyone has advice, comments, experience.. anything to help me decide!!!

Thanks,

Collin

I don't mind the stacking issues with a tuper/coolerdore. First off, you don't dig down deep on a daily basis anyway, the stuff you want to lay up for 6 months - several years goes on the bottom and even then it's just not a big deal to get to it. Secondly, that very ability to access everything at once in the vertical storage of a wineador (or bigger) also means that you're getting way more air exchange in that system than you are a tuper. Crack the seal on a tuperdore and you really get just how concentrating the tobacco scents can get.

Biggest downside of the Tuper/Cooler is lack of temperature control, so if you have it in a room that experiences large temperature variations, that will get translated to the cigars. If you have a cool basement, and can control your rH though, the cooler/tuper is a pretty good solution.

As PapaDisco has said above, the stacking issues and access to your boxes is not a major issue with the tuperdor solution. An excellent variation on this is the large (up to 74 quart) watertight storage totes conbined with humidification beads. Great seal (better than most coolers) and they are clear so you are able to see inside the container without having to open it up. The only caveat, as noted by papadisco, is lack of temperature control. If you have central air though this should not be a problem as long as you keep them in cool area of the house.

The lack of temperature control control is not a big issue, what I am working with now stays pretty stable between 65-70.

I have made up my mind on a coolerdor many times, but I am always too damn indecisive about things.

Buying a wineador doesn't make sense in monetary terms.. but they do look nice lol

Like all things cigars, cigar storage is a matter of taste. I talk to a lot of people about this 'elemental' question as a purveyor of specific humidor solutions. Many people don't want to spend the money on the solutions that I provide and in all fairness, many people don't need what I sell. That in itself should tell you a lot about the question that you ask.

The straight talk goes like this. You are the only one that matters when it comes to opinions about this subject. Some of us fall into a narrow end of this spectrum for many a reason. You need not nor should not follow anyone blindly without some experience pushing your decision. I have to ask then; who are you and what are your specific wants or perceived needs? Just as you cannot define my wants or needs, I cannot define yours without knowing if you have specific problems to solve. If your problem is just a box to store, emulate what some others have done that express success and contentment with their solution. If it has to look a certain way, get prepared to pay the freight for that want...!

People who align with me typically will often have their tastes viewed as cultish by others. One who has acquired a distaste for wet cigars is somewhat 'driven' by the desire to control water content in their cigars to some rather high degree of precision. This "camp" for lack of a better term cannot really be explained, it has to be experienced. I think the rewards are worth the efforts and costs but one cannot decide for you.

My suggestion is that you should try at least one of the minimalist approaches that are cost effective first. This is logical and honest. If they work for you then enjoy them and your cigars and have a good laugh at 'the cult's' expense. As I see it, you are not right for the specific problems I can solve because you don't appear to have any specific problem above and beyond indecision and some budgetary restraints. Those are not really the problems that I specialize in...

Furthermore, I would not attempt a wine cooler project unless you have the skill, knowledge or the wherewithal (mindset and money) to support the endeavor. I can tell you this based on a lot of experience. Try keeping it simple. Wine cooler humidors are not simple! If you are just in it for the looks, buy one and don't plug it in!

My opinion? Who gives a **** about what it looks like if it is filled with the priceless gems that you call quality cigars. It is not the bands nor the boxes that you smoke. The cooler, the foot locker, and the box that you pull them from means precious little "unless" one or more of those specific factors link you to a prime smoking experience. If you want to drive a specific car for its looks, that is a personal choice.

I say that you should have specific symptoms first before going to the specialist who is getting paid to solve specific issues. Call it an axiom that budget will almost always be an issue with complex controlled solutions. Why then should you pursue them if you don't know for a fact that you need one to solve your specific problems?

I hope that helps. If nothing else it is honest!!!

Cheers, and good luck on your project. -the Pig

I was waiting for you to post Piggy, thanks everyone for the posts.

I dont nessessarily have issues with my current setup, other then a small drop im humidty in the colder months, but in the warmer ones humidity stays solid as well as temp.

I'll try the minimalistic approach, seeing as how its working for me so far, though a little more planning for growth of stock! wink2.gif
