Montecristo No.4 ~ GEO Mar14 ~ Easter Review Comp.

Recommended Posts

Greetings fellow FOHers and welcome to my first cigar review...ever.

THE CIGAR : Montecristo No.4 GEO Mar14

THE CUT : Punch cut (my recent method of choice)

THE PAIRING : A coffee of dark espresso roasted bean made with my beloved Aeropress with a smidge of heavy cream added.

THE ATMOSPHERE : It's frickin' snowing...on Easter! You gotta be kidding me with this sh!t. It doesn't take long before I move back inside to enjoy this cigar while being warmed by a lovely woodstove burning sticks of walnut and watching a documentary on Scottish Whisky.

PRE-LIGHT : I don't put a lot of stock into the pre-light offerings other than it sets the mood for the main event. The cigar looks beautiful and has a slight tobacco/barnyard aroma.

FIRST THIRD : The Monte No.4 is a bit slow out of the gate offering little more than muted notes of coffee, toasted tobacco on the retro and a creamy mouthfeel. It stays this way for nearly the entire first third. The toasted tobacco, while pleasant enough, is dominant and strikes me as a function of youth.

SECOND THIRD : The toasted tobacco retro subsides significantly but remains in the background. Cocoa flavors rush to the fore-front and take the lead on this third. Very tasty! Coffee notes are still present but play second fiddle to the cocoa. The creamy mouthfeel is much more pleasant now that the youth attributes have settled quite a bit.

As the second third progresses the coffee grows and mixes with the cocoa almost evenly to give the cigar a wonderful, smooth and delicious flavor.

FINAL THIRD : The cream finally makes a stronger appearance in flavor and mixes with the cocoa knocking the coffee back to an undernote. This is truly a delicious combination but unfortunately it is short lived. Quickly the youth comes roaring back in this third with the coffee and cocoa becoming greatly diminished, the cream returning to a mouthfeel characteristic and toasted tobacco regaining dominance. While still smooth and enjoyable, the flavors stay like this for the remainder of the cigar.

THE CONSTRUCTION : The cigar lit easily with my trusty $4 Ronson single flame lighter. The burn gave me zero problems. The draw was mostly perfect with a few spots getting tight. A simple roll of the head between my fingers was all it needed to loosen up each time.

THE CONCLUSION : The youth showed itself very much for most of the first and final thirds of the cigar. If the middle third is an indication of what this stick may become in its entirety than I am going to be very pleased with this box Rob picked for me. Smoking time was an hour and a half.

I hope you enjoyed this review, thanks for reading!

Great first review! Montecristo 2's and 4's can be like searching for the perfect cup of coffee...you might not ever get there, but you enjoy them when they are close and bear it when they are not! biggrin.png
