CoCigarSmoker
Romeo y Julieta Churchill Tubo Hello again guys, I just had to get out for a cigar today. The weather is sunny and 70*F and all is right in the world. Figured since it was a day off I had the time to sit down for as long as I wanted and enjoy “one” of the biggest cigars I have at the moment. I am beginning to grow to enjoy my smaller vitolas but I still love to sit down for 2+ hours on occasion and enjoy smoking one big long stick . You’ll notice as this review progresses you might find it to be slightly more PG-13….slightly more risqué, or innuendo riddled. In an effort to spice up my cigar life or keep things interesting sometimes you have to try something new. This review while blatant with some promiscuous adjectives is not to be confused with smut….don’t worry no explicatives!! So if you want to carry on and read about Romeo and Juliet’s big stick I hope you enjoy, and for those that find it distasteful, well, life is short, lighten up! In an effort not to get whiskey stick, I figured I’d run this review with a nice blue dolphin on the rocks….water for all you land locked lads. Construction As we all know first impressions are just about everything…not everything, but just about. The history and tenure of R and J is wonderful and sometimes it’s good to hit up ole’ faithful. I’m not sure I’d say that R and J is synonymous with perfection but generally they aren’t too shabby in my opinion. Not the best, but okay. Which brings us to the stick at hand, a nice R and J Churchill Tubo. The wrapper on this cigar is a perfect example of a true Colorado shade; A beautiful deep reddish brown. The wrapper isn’t covered in a beautiful oily sheen but it is fairly pretty as it sits. I will say there are some bigger veins in this cigar than what I have seen in recent sticks (everyone got a mental picture of a big veiny stick?) The cigar was stored in its tubo, which remained sealed. The cigar was kept at a fairly constant 61-64% Rh and about 60-65* F. The cigar has a triple cap and the foot of the cigar had nothing of note. The cigar did have some soft spots throughout and had a slight crack in the wrapper that extended ¼” up from the foot. Pre-light I didn’t feel that this cigar was under filled but given the earlier noted soft spots I thought it “could” be a possibility. That being said, I’m not sure what’s going on but man is the draw tight. During my cold draw I knew it was tight but I didn’t realize how much work I would need until later. Even with the tight draw my first thought is, “this is soooooo R and J”. Cold notes of warm barnyard and hay were met with a smooth velvety texture of subdued fruit, almost a dark chocolate currant cream. First Third I used my trusty Bugatti dual flame butane lighter for ignition and the cigar took nicely to the flame. However, when it came time to begin drawing on the cigar man did I suddenly feel bad for what hookers have to go through. Boy talk about getting your workout by sucking hahaha….I’m not sure if I would say this cigar is plugged, but this draw definitely requires too much work and is taking away from the experience and relaxation aspect that I so dearly enjoy. That being said, if it weren’t for the flavors I’d probably snub out this guy. But then again, boy do we have flavor. At least if I’m putting in work like a curbside Saturday slam piece I might as well get some flavor out of this game right? It was hard to get a lot of volume of smoke and I had to string together three draws instead of my normal two, but I was rewarded at last….gifted with the money shot if you will . The first thing that hits you, in the eye if you’re not ready, is that beautiful Cuban barnyard/hay profile. Nothing during this first third comes close to matching this barnyard flavor and it’s definitely the dominate taste. Still there is a subtle complexity involved with notes of leather, just a pinch of spice/pepper, and roasted tobacco that round out the experience. Now as we go deeper in this first third I am reminded that not all cigar ashes are straight as a stick, some are curved in all the right places….others in all the wrong places. Either way as long as it’s good for you I suppose it doesn’t matter right? Just prior to getting into that second third I almost got the ashy money shot to my face….lucky for me it just ended up all over my pants. It managed to hold on for about 1 1/4” before letting go. Second Third The second third is more subdued or prude if you will. The flavors that were big and bold in the beginning are more smoothed out and easier on the palate. I don’t quite feel that this is a good thing but it’s also not per say a bad thing. I mean let’s face it, sex is sex, it’s all good but some are great! I still feel like I’m practicing for the lot lizard Olympics, sucking golf balls through a garden hose, but hey everyone has to be good at something. On a positive note the burn on this cigar seems to be pretty consistent and even the whole way through. Now it may be the fact that I’ve been awake since 3am this morning, or perhaps I can now sympathise with all the ladies who have been put to sleep by their “lovers” but either way my eye lids are getting heavy; I’m even thinking of pulling the “I have a headache” card on this thick Cuban stick. The flavor profile hasn’t changed a ton, the most discernable and enjoyable notes are that of barnyard and muscular oiled up Cuban cabelleros….errr I mean barnyard and hay!! Gosh I just can’t control where my mind wonders. It’s not *** if you just think it right…RIGHT? Don’t answer that, I’m married, I swear it, and she’s real! On a super serial note, there is just a touch of bitterness/ammonia at the very end of the draw. Nothing that really detracts from the cigar but nonetheless it is there every so often. As you continue to follow me as I take this cigar deeper and deeper by the third I must say that the draw is just barely “easing” up. Or perhaps I’m just becoming more worn out than a lamb skin jimmy. I digress…on with the review. There are still some notes of leather and earth that show their face every so often. Overall, the second third hasn’t really been all that much to write about, hence the abundance of sexual innuendos lol. Final Third I was holding off on talking about the body and/or strength of the cigar until now but I feel like it’s safe to say this cigar is on the mild to medium side of things. The first third was more medium while the second third was milder. As we continue into the beginning of the final third I’d say it’s pretty dead center of mild/medium. I am about 1 hr. and 10 minutes into this cigar and still have a full third left. I must say I thought things would go by a lot slower but as all you fine fellas know, once you start pounding guts no one wants to slow down! I think it’s mostly because the cigar is shorter now but the draw has eased up just slightly and the volume of drawn smoke has increased which is a nice touch. Apparently I wasn’t orally fixated enough on my stick because it lost its light. Nothing a little more tender love and care couldn’t correct and we are back in the game. I suppose this could be considered “fluffing” in the adult movie industry lol. The volume of smoke has finally increased and the draw has eased up enough to where I don’t think my neck muscles are going to require an ice bath. The barnyard flavors have now taken a backseat to bigger notes of roasted tobacco, leather, earth, and spice. The heat of the cigar has increased just slightly but nothing that doesn’t always happen as you approach where the bands used to be affixed. I am noticing a slight head rush from the nicotine at this point. Combining this with my lack of sleep could explain the utter chaos and delirium that this review is chocked full of. This last draw makes me want to reverse my previous statement. The barnyard is back and all flavors are easily discernable. And, oddly enough as I allowed the last of the smoke to exit this last go around I was hit with a big note of cinnamon on the finish…not sure where that came from but it was cool! Overall takeaway: The construction was, no pun intended, a real draw back. The flavor profile of this cigar started big and just died out in the second third. The final third opened back up, but not enough to really get that wow factor going. My first thought on this cigar is, “typical R and J”. Not bad aside from the draw but definitely nothing I anticipate running out and buying. Overall, if the draw was much easier I’d still rather smoke this cigar than most of the NC’s I have in my humi, but I much prefer other CC’s to this stick. I’d say that the first third was medium body, second third was mild, and the last third powered up there about med/full with a very healthy nicotine kick. I hope all you sick minded fellers out there enjoyed my twisted humor and just remember all your local strippers and hookers are working their way through college so throw a few extra singles around, sucking golf balls through a garden hose is hard work!!!!!!!!!!!! Total smoking time was 2 hrs 20 min. Cheers, Seth
CoCigarSmoker
Nice review, sorry about the draw though. No offence, but the day I start thinking about fellatio while smoking a cigar is the day I think about quitting. I'll tell you what bro, it wasn't a great experience, but the flavor wasn't bad so I tried to stick it out. Cheers, Seth
JohnS
It's good to have a laugh, Seth! It's weird how the last two cigars you've reviewed you had a Bolivar PC with great construction and no flavour, and then a RyJ Churchill with the exact opposite...difficult draw with plenty of flavour! RyJ is another marca I've lucked out on. My first enjoyable one was a week and a half ago, a Churchill with good flavours of cherry, chocolate and leather, but I had to adjust the burn and re-light a few times. I'm leaving my other ones to rest for awhile. Thanks for another entertaining review!
CoCigarSmoker
Glad you guys enjoyed the review. I'm sure I thought my jokes were funnier in my state of delirium that day. Glad you've had good luck with R and J. I'll revisit the marca again sometime when I see a sampler or five pack pop up. But for now it's been a blast just working through all the different cigars and seeing what is what. Cheers, Seth
