dangolf18 Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 I recently got some heartfelt beads for my humidor. My humidor is pretty small so I just have one cylinder of beads (500ct humidor). Should the beads always be fully saturated?
ElJefe Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 That's a Big No No Mate. Do not completely saturate your beads in any way. Get a spray bottle and lightly spray on some Distilled Water only. Let your beads sit in the humidor for a good day or so and check the RH. If need be you can lightly spray again. Saturating your will work to ruin them. Make sure you use Distiller water only as regular water has a lot of impurities which will affect the beads function and may even alter their color over time. Make sure you season your humidor well before introducing the beads. Your cigars should be last in, once all is good with your humidor. Hope this helps. Cheers.
Diamondog Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 Split the beads up in quantity, 70/30 mist the 70 quantity pile so they are clear and mix in the dry 30 quantity pile...70 wet 30 dry is a good mixture, you'll know when its time to mist...i would suggest misting rather than submerging, they crack when submerged enough times...still effective cracked but messy 1

I've made the mistake of wetting them too much and got cracked beads :/
stogieluver Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Spray/mist 2/3rds to 3/4ths of the tube with distilled water. Spray/mist until the beads in that portion of the tube start to turn from white to opaque. The change is subtle but you'll be able to see the difference. I didn't have to spray the tube but maybe once every two to three months.
dvickery Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Gonna go against the flow here ... Never wet your beads ... A chunk of florists foam well wetted ... Is all you need ... It will season your humi and saturate your beads . I have beads that are 12 or 14 years old ... Have never been wetted and work as good as when I bought them . Derrek 2
Rye Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 I second what Derrek said. I use an indirect method to add moisture to my beads. They will regulate the environment they are in, and if you feel it is too dry, a saturated sponge in a cup, or something like that will rehydrate your humi and your beads.
jazzboypro Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 I agree With Derrek, the beads are made to absorb (adsorb is the proper technical word i think) water vapor and not liquid water. I let mine absord water vapor from florists foam well wetted. It probably takes more time than wetting the beads but at the end it works just as well. I get the advantage of not having the beads to crack and the mess that comes with it.
airtrade Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 I spray my heartfelt beads with distiller water. Or use A curved plastic tip syringe. Works well on those plastic tubes heartfelt sells. I Agree only wet 70% of the beads. HCM beads I use the indirect method with a sponge and tap water.
Diamondog Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Look at the beads when you first get them, a lot of them are already clear as they come hydrated....I am guessing they are not saturated from absorption.....anyways whatever works all the same idea.
dangolf18 Posted November 24, 2014 Author Posted November 24, 2014 Oh woops. I've been dousing them with distilled water. Hopefully they still work.
Diamondog Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Oh woops. I've been dousing them with distilled water. Hopefully they still work. They'll be fine....get yourself a NEW never used spray bottle, throw some distilled water in. I cut off the ends of the girlfriends old stockings and load the foot with the beads either in half pound or full pound packs and tie them off with a twist tie, makes misting them real easy. Mine are all in coolers so very practical for that maybe not so much for other setups.
JustinThyme Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 First thing is to put them in your humi as is with no water added. Ive seen many folks do the 70/30, 60/40 etc and end up with too much moisture. My method is, has been and always will be to put them in there as is, they ship at the desired RH, for me its 65%. I then leave them for a few days and if everything looks good as within a few points I leave them be, if the humi is too dry I very lightly mist the bead with a spray bottle and distilled water then wait and repeat as necessary. Ive got 2 lbs in a 28 bottle wineador that do not have a single clear bead that I can see and I havent added any water to them in months. The wineador is sitting dead on 65% BTW, I dont htink one cylinder is enough for a 500 count. My wineador holds 500 sticks and I have 2 lbs in there. Here is the link to their calculator that tell you by the measurements of how much you need. Its better to have too much than not enough. http://www.heartfeltindustries.com/calculator.asp
