Well my australian friends, looks like Australia and the United States got some real tough draws.

The Aussie (49) draw: Brazil (1), Croatia (20) and Japan (15). Wow!

The Yankee (8) draw: Italy (12), Ghana (50) and Czeck Republic (2).

Neither country got much of a break, but it looks like the Socceroo's definitely have the harder road to advance. Regardless, I'm looking forward to next year. Maybe El Presidente will put together a Football contest like the current NFL contest.

Best of luck to the Socceroo's and all the other countries represented on Cigar-Czar.

Yup, both teams will have a hard time to advance, but IMO, the US has have the tougher route. Australia have a good chance in beating Croatia to come second in the group, but the US is facing 2 of the toughest European teams. I still can't believe that the US was not seeded and Mexico was. The US performed better at the last World Cup, beat Mexico twice in the last year, tied the other 2 games, qualified top of the region, and was consistently ranked higher than Mexico in the world rankings the last 2 years. Arrrgh.

Here's a prediction for you: England win next year's World Cup and the US will win in 2010.

You really think we can win in 2010? I haven't had a chance to really look at the brackets for the World Cup, so I really cannot comment about England's chances. But yes, our bracket is nails!

Once College Football is over, I will get geared up for the Cup.

Strayvector,

As a rule most Aussies don't like to see England win anything. We like 'em with their tail between their legs and their morale low so it hurts even more when we beat them. However, with soccer this is a little different. I don't mind seeing them do well, after all they invented the game but they will have to play above themselves. It was about 18 months ago when Australia beat them in England and yes, they had all their gun players on the field :-D That was priceless!

The highlight of the world cup is that New Zealand didn't make it and the traditional 4 yearly choking of England.

The Socceroos are certainties.

I will run a World Cup Competition

i must say thaat is one of the most un-australian things i have ever read. i lived in the uk when they last won the ashes - many many years ago - it was hell, a never-ending, dantesque, hell that goya couldn't painting in his wildest moments. if they were playing osama at tiddly-winks, i'd be there waving my ak47. the first rule of being aussie is that the poms cannot win anything. my nightmare is a world cup final between the poms and kiwis in anything (i'd have to go marginally for the kiwis and friends know how much that would hurt). as one mate said, the 91 cricket world cup final between the poms and the pakistanis turned 19 million aussies into instant muslims.

i was also there for the infamous 'hand of god' goal by madonna in the 86 world cup - now that was a moment to cherish.

!LOL!

Ken speaks the truth.

Albeit my heart would favour the Poms over the Kiwi's at Rugby....If I could watch.

The hand of God just showcased how the Heavens are inclined ;-)

Ok, ok I take your point.

I don't want them to win or anything but having lived over there for a couple of years it kind of sucks you in a bit and you get to know the players/clubs etc. It would be the only sport where I would make that kind of statement (as rash as it may be).

Rob, please don't ban me from the forum...

Hmmm, Ken, do you have the ability to alter my posts? Don't remember typing the last sentence on my post above...

Although the yanks are a good unit I reckon the aussies have a better chance of advancing. Australia to beat Japan, draw with Croatia and not get flogged by as much as the the other two by Brazil. The czechs are a real chance to make the final and Italy are too good not to advance. I'm hoping to go and follow the aussies if I can get through the ballot for a tour. Should be one biiiiig partee. :-D

The Czechs are currently the 2nd ranked national team behind Brazil. They are much more creative, faster, and more talented than the Italians. Unfortunately, the Italians are still head and shoulders better than the US. Hopefully the US can beat Ghana and tie the Italians like they did against Portugal in 2002. If they can do this, then they have a good chance of advancing. The Italians tend to play too conservatively when leading which keeps their goal differential down. If the US can attack and score a few goals against Ghana, this might just give them the better goal differential needed against the Italians to advance. Unfortunately, I think the Italians will beat them quite easily.
