Popular Post soutso Posted August 2, 2014 Popular Post Posted August 2, 2014 Written Friday night, posted Saturday morning: It's cold! This afternoon I saw El Presidente's generous offer encouraging us to review something this weekend and thus be in the running to win some aged sticks. This inspired me to pull out something I planned to keep for a special occasion. Being weak willed, I have used this offer as an excuse and in the spirit of competition, I have sacrificed this delicious looking cigar. Did I mention that it's cold? I have smooth talked the good wife to allow me and my cat to share her art studio space so that we can indulge in our passions together. (The wife and me not the cat and me) It's also nice to see how she goes about creating these pieces. Before the light the cigar smelt lovely. It had a sweat tobacco smell to it First third Nice dark chocolate taste from the get go. A perfect start. This is my fourth review and all have been very positive. It's not that I love every cigar I try, it's just that thus far, I have only reviewed sticks I usually enjoy. Having said that, this is only my third ever Genios. Above: Cat There's a pleasant peppery note in this cigar too. There's some resistance in the draw, (cold, it was a solid feeling stick) I hope this doesn't indicate that there will be any plugging issues later on. The smoke itself is thick. I note the Mrs commented that she likes the scent but it's 'not as nice as the last time.' The last time was a Bolivar Petit Corona (HQ) I always take a wiff of the smoke and this one is cedar like. I look at the artwork again. I'm trying to work out what been added since I last looked. I can't tell. I have never been particularly observant. If I ever witnessed a crime, I'd be hopeless at describing anything. "Officer, he was about six foot with dark hair... sorry he was actually bald or did he wear a hat? Oh Fff.." As I approach the end of the first third that grassiness is coming into play. It's a creamy grassiness with a chocolatey aftertaste. Second Third The retro hale is smooth. I can still detect grassy and chocolatey notes but they have developed in smoothness. It's kind of enhanced like when you eat cake without the icing then eat a piece with icing. (I just impressed myself with what I just wrote) I noticed an email exchange on the forum where an annoying enquiry was encouraged to purchase from 'solocigars' - I hadn't heard of them. After a quick search I was delighted to read on their site that Cohiba is their oldest brand on offer. The brand dates back from 1492! (Perhaps their site has been around since then too) Now there's a group of dudes you can trust. Into the second third and the chocolate notes are gone and the lovely grassiness is dominating. It's a beautiful cigar. Back to the work, can you see any difference? I cannot! Kind of looks like a beaten up peacock. She just told me that this is an experimental piece. By this stage the cat wants out. Why? It's warm in here. The sweet smell of cedar abounds. I just don't understand the beautiful creature I am sharing the room with. I don't understand the cat either. I won't say this is a complex cigar given that I have only detected two main flavours. I can say that those flavours developed nicely as I've gone along. The nicotine kick is making my head buzz ever so pleasantly. Like I've had a few drinks. Final Third Unfortunately it's getting a little tight now. I'm having to make an effort and I never like having to make an effort. I will persist however. She's plugging away at her work. She's so patient. Such a steady hand. As a last resort I've grabbed a toothpick and will attempt to improve the draw. I feel this cigar is slightly too packed. Success! More grassy tobacco flavours. The smoke is still thick. There's a nice woody aftertaste. It's just so pleasant all round. The cat's back. She ain't dumb. I am a little disappointed to require a toothpick to unplug the cigar. I pretty much need to reinsert it before every puff now otherwise it's unsmokable. The last thing you want is to have to work for it, but it is what it is. Flavour wise it keeps on giving but it is getting a little hot now. If anyone has any advice on unplugging feel free to comment. Finishing up, I am happy with the cigar but the plugging is disappointing. The flavours were very pleasurable but not overly complex. 6
Habana Mike Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Very nice review and great pics/art. Awesome the wife lets you smoke in there with her now! However, you forgot to use REVIEW in the title though: One review per person. Start a new thread per post. Thread to be titled: Name of Cigar Box Code: Review ie Cohiba Robusto BTO SEP 13 : Review Wonder, can you edit that?
soutso Posted August 2, 2014 Author Posted August 2, 2014 Thanks HM. I will try to when I access my computer as it won't let me on my phone. Cheers
Laynard Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 I absolutely love your wife's art! I'm really into texture. I want it. If only I hadn't spent too much money on cigars... 2
SMQQKIN Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Love your reviews with the art, cat, & other observations. I hate watching some random guy chew on the smoke, pontificate the blend & rate his smoke rings. I'd rather look at your wife's art & read your brief commentary on the cigar. Well done! 1
