I'm thinking about buying a 15 box of aged Mag 46's. All boxes offered are from '05 different months from May to July, but various codes. My choices are FIM, FJN, ZFI or ZTV.

I don't have any experience with the year or factory codes. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Going on the assumption that you are talking about a box of 3x5 cardboard packs, this might be worth a read:

If my assumption is incorrect, please disregard.

Yes 3x5 cardboard packs.

Thanks for the link... But now I'm confused. A lot of mixed opinions there.

I had problems with cardboard even after 2 yrs. I would not jump on it personally.

And I'm the one who always says how freaking good the recent production is. I just can't get enough of magnum 46. Failed to put away the last 3 boxes :D

It will be a crap shoot.

factory code and month on these won't save you. There was precious little consistency in Cardboard packs at the time (a situation that really only started improving from 2010...just my opinion)

Cardboard is also a dicey skin for ageing. I personally don't like it for long term aging.

If you do get a box I would pull them out of the packs right away and let them sit in a humi for a while, I did that with mine, based on the suggestion from a friend, and there was a noticeable difference in flavor from the one I tried a week after receiving and the one I had 4 months later.

I transferred to a box as well. Sadly this did nothing for them. Perhaps it was just my petacas. Like Rob said, is a crap shoot.

I just received a 3*5 15 count FJN May 05. Without smoking any yet, surprisingly the wrappers looked fine, and there was a slight aroma of barnyard at cold. Loaded them into a empty box and will let them sit for a month or so before I smoke one. Will report back and let you know how they smoke. I think I know your source, and they have always been good to me.

I was just looking at these. I'm going to hold off and see how anjimj's experience is in a month. Although the price is great, I'm not sure I want to deal with the crap shoot Rob is talking about.

Smoked some 08 tube stock and they were gorgeous. Some say stocks earlier than 08 are not consistent, but I have no knowledge of that. Looking to try some new ones to see the difference.

Tube is different. They are individually wrapped in cedar sheets in the tube. The point here was the cardboard pack.

I see.

When the OP said 15 boxes I assumed it was the tubes.

Just had an '05 today from the same place your (probably) looking at. Aged toasted tobacco and alot of wood (cedar). Pretty nice but have had better ones by a long shot.

The old saying goes that alot of times there's a reason cigars from certain vintages remain available today. Sometimes you do get lucky tho.post-12791-0-28822900-1404647499_thumb.j

I am late to this thread but I am on my 3rd 15 box of these. These are my go to golfing cigars to enjoy and share care free with whomever I happen to be enjoying a round with.

For the price I think they are very good, yes they may not have aged as well in the cardboard but they are still very smooth and flavorful to me. Goes without saying, they wont blow you away but they are not supposed to, for an everday aged cuban I think they are definately worth a pick up.
