Cabinet Humidor Experts Needed - Air Circulation/Fan Questions

Recommended Posts

Gentlemen,

I've recently upgraded to a cabinet humidor. It's the "Tower Cigar" cabinet. I also put the Cigar Oasis Magna humidifier in it. I let that run at 70% for almost two weeks until the humidity stayed there and it was seasoned. I dropped the humidity to 65% for a few days and then put my smokes in.

Here's my problem: you see the drawers for singles? The humidity just lingers in there and stays around 75-79% throughout the drawers even though the humidifier is set at 65%. The top sections are fine, staying at a solid 65%. I'm going to add more PC fans to the cabinet as I'm aware I need better circulation. What exactly would be the prime locations for said fans? I'd like to get the air flowing through the drawers... so should I mount two fans to the bottom of both sides of drawers, forcing the air through the grates in the wood?

Furthermore, what's your best fan placement for the best circulation possible? How many fans will I need? What size fans - 80mm or 120mm? How do you adhere them inside your cabinets? Are they titled at angles?

Here's a pic of the humidifier and its fans:

I dry flooded houses out for a living. So we work with air movers and humidity daily.

If I had to guess I would say you want to get the air going in a cyclonic action. This action will mix the air and send it up to the top as well. By facing fans towards the sides at a 45* angle this would be accomplished. One or two fans are all you should need.

The problem that Im not sure about is the drawer area? Its like a wall! Very hard to get the air/ humidification to pass through them If they are full of sticks, (which I hope they are, LOL.) there is not a good way to force the air/ humidification through? Can the drawer area be adjusted to another area of cabinet? If not, I would say you will need to run the drawers half full with plenty of room for the circulation to pass through. The other option would be to switch up to trays instead of drawers. That would certainly suck after you have made the investment you have.

Very nice set up by the way. Please keep us posted on what you find that works. Good Luck. Feel free to PM me if you would like to pick my brain anymore.

Agree with StogieDud3, it looks like those drawers are blocking your circulation and humidity. If you can't move the drawers then relocate the Oasis to the top shelf. I know that it's a big no-no to put a bucket of water in a spot where it could potentially leak all over your sticks, but if you put the Oasis in a tray with a lip big enough such that it could hold the entire contents of the Oasis reservoir should it leak then you'll have a fail safe system and your humidity should even out.

Beautiful cabinet though!

Hang a second lads, I will leave this for the big boys and "specialists" to confirm, but humidity rises. As such, the drawers should relocate to the bottom of the cabinet. Failing that, drilling a series of holes or slats throughout the drawers will help with the dispersal of humidity but may not help with the direct air flow. I personally would position some dry 65% beads throughout the drawers to begin with and go from there.

Ah, correct, my bad! If temps are constant and the water stays as a gas then it is a lighter molecule and will rise. Thanks for the reminder. What we visually experience as humidity "falling" is when it has condensed into tiny droplets of liquid water (which is of course heavier than air).

Anyway, the challenge with this cabinet is getting the humidity around the drawers, regardless of where he puts his Oasis.

All great responses and ideas, guys. I really appreciate it.

Unfortunately the drawers can't be relocated. They all have large vents in them for air circulation but I'm afraid they don't do much as the humid air just seems to linger in the drawers.

I've removed all singles from the drawers for now and placed them at the top where it's a constant 65%.

This is certainly more of a challenge than throwing some Boveda packs into a desktop humidor!

Our resident humidor expert pigfish might be able to offer more guidance here but when that happened with my humi I put a pound of 60% heartfelt beads in each draw and the humidity stablized at around 66%

Dry beads? Were you using them to soak up humidity?

I'm working on filling the entire cabinet from head to toe. FOH has been making quite a few deliveries to me as of late.

  • 8 months later...

Any up dates as to what you did to solve the problem and how the humidor is doing. i ask because it is the same humidor I am looking to get for my B-Day

I removed the bottom drawers and put a PC fan on each side - pushing air through all the drawers. The humidity no longer lingers around in there. If my hygrometer is set at 69%, it stays around 69% to 70% inside all of the drawers. I have two more PC fans facing upwards in the open space just above all the drawers. It was staying rather dry at the very top of the humidor and with those extra fans pushing air upwards it has helped a lot. Again, if the hygrometer is set at 69% the very top of the humidor is around 65%. When I wasn't using those extra fans the top of the humidor was around 55%.

It's a nice humidor and holds humidity well, but those damned shelves really create an air flow problem. Plan on putting down some extra money on fans and USB hubs to ensure optimal air distribution.

Wizzard, the fans are constantly running.

Clint, I'm not sure to be honest. That's certainly a possibility. A gentleman that goes to my local smoke shop has almost the same humidor. He said he had the same humidity issue in the drawers.

It's most likely not much help but I have the same humidor without the draws though and it too took awhile for the humidity to stabilize. For mine I bought a 4 canister accumonitor with extra fans and removed one of the top shelves (which may help as I found I could fit more boxes and there was not enough space in between shelves in my opinion) and still had different humidity from 2-3 degrees top to bottom. The temps are lower in the bottom due to being on an unfinished cement basement floor so it makes sense I suppose. What I did to remedy the situation was just used beads I had from prior use to balance out the humidity. In the lower humidity part I also put my cabinet boxes with a mini boveda's in them as well to just be sure. It obviously is a little more work than preferred but really not a big deal on my end.

One thing I would watch out for was the original door to my humidor warped for some reason. When I called I was sent another one immediately so there was no issue but it is something I would keep an eye out for if the humidity goes awry in the future. Otherwise, good luck and have fun filling it up!

Hutch,

Yes I'm certain. My digital hygrometers were just calibrated and it is always dryer at the top. I just think it's an air flow issue. As long as my stogies are between 65% rh and 70% I'm happy. I have my non-Cubans where it's more humid and my Cubans at the top where it's less humid.

I have a cabinet that I built after a very frustrating and unsuccessful attempt with the same humidor you have. My issue was the humidity was not reaching the top, past the drawers. even with the help of 6 fans... In my opinion it is just a poor design.
