Greetings all,

Question about temperature. Do you guys know of anything that Home Depot or other places might sell something small enough to put in a humidor that controls temperature? My Aristocrat controls humidity but not temperature. My RH stays at 65 but my temp gets up to 71° and it's winter here is Southern California. The coldest room in my house is the closet, so obviously I'm not going to put my humidor in the closet. I've been reading a lot about beetles and really want to protect my investment. I have a new Aristocrat being built for me, and I can add the Temperature for about $1,000 just wondering if there is another solution that might be cheaper. I live in one the hottest part of San Diego any my house gets warm in the long summer months.

Suggestions?

Talked to Bob, and he stated its $1300 for the THC to be added. He said its a good insurance policy of you store CC's because they don't use pesticides on CC, and usually beetles appear when CC are in the cabinet. So I added it.

For something big like an Aristocrat, I think you'd be best going with the manufacturer's solution even if it's pricey. I'd also like a second layer of defense though, like being able to air condition and humidify the room in question to some base level in case the Humi systems ever fail.

The CC's that I take with me to Saigon I now freeze at home before departure. The factory freezing does seem to eliminate almost all beetles, but it's not perfect (I had a beetle in PSD4 ordered from Germany recently). Temperature control in Saigon is impossible, so the freezing is good insurance. The problem with beetle eggs is that they need an over 70F temp to hatch, but then they can still live at lower temps and munch away, so that few days you get a bit warm is enough to start the little buggers going (IF any eggs survived the factory freeze). If you're worried about it, just ziplock each new box; refrigerate for a day, freeze for a day or two, refrigerate for a day again and you're good.

I don't like thermoelectric cooling units, but if you have it in your budget and since San Diego doesn't get really hot, you can add the one from bob, or buy and build your own for about $300. Or If its just a short period of time worrying about harsh conditions , buy a double insulated, anti-condensation container and put freezer packs in it, and place at the top of your humidor, keep more packs in the freezer and change out as needed.

Definitely have the THC added your are crazy not to. Bob is building a Humi for me now and I had 4 coolers put in as I am in Florida and it gets hot hot hot in the summer here.

I've called Bob and had him add it to mine. I have a one year old and another baby on the way so the wife likes to keep the house at 72. My humidor today reached 74. In the summer, it stays in the high 80's some 90+ for long periods of time as I live in the Valley.

No thc on mine and it's regularly in the low 70s but i keep my rh low and house cool in summertime.

So do you set it at 65 RH? Or lower. My End Table is set at 65 but reading 74°. If I lower it, will it bring down the Temp?

I took out my 5 boxes of CC that I just received and put them in a Tupperware with a 65 Bovida until my new cabinet comes. My end table has all NC's, I'm wondering if the RH will be too low if I bring it down for the NC's. Everything was fine until I started reading about Beetles. Lol I almost went to Costco to buy a wine cooler then return in a couple of weeks. Still might be a option if I can't get the Temp to come down in my house.

I think it was a good decision to upgrade your Aristocrat order to THC. I may be wrong, but I think the THC units have more insulation, which also helps to keep temperature constant.

Keeping your cigars at constant temperature not higher than 70F has more advantages than just minimizing risk of beetles. They will age better.

That's correct, Bob mentioned the process and has a couple layers of something, not sure exactly but it sounded good to my ears.
