My wife and son are going to Nicaragua this summer for about 4 days and I had heard that you can bring back up to 50 cigars per person and you can get them fairly inexpensively compared to what you pay for the same cigars in the states. But I'm also hearing there is nowhere to by the cigars I'm interested in because they are all made for export. I would appreciate any info on buying good cigars in Nicaragua.

When I was the 1998 it was really hard to find other "luxury goods" than Coca cola and local rum (flor de caña is a good buy).

Well, hope that will be an unusefull bit of Info :-)

I don't have experience in purchases in South America. But I'm certain there HAS to be some sort of foreign visitors' embassies there that can be consulted as far as "where to stay": "where to eat": etc. I'm sure there will be a "shop here" location guide for certain items and commodities. I would try taking that route. Who knows, there will probably be other visitors or residents from the States that can safely direct you to certain shops and so on that you're looking for. Hope that helps!

Esteli, Nicaragua is the home to many very respected tobacco companies. I am not sure if they have shops associated with their factories but worth a shot. I would be very leery of buying them in shops on the street unless you know the vendor is good, even for NCs. Can you imagine a how awesome a fake or home rolled NC would be!?

Guys, don't lynch me. It was a joke.

Seriously.

Put down the pitchforks.

Why are you looking at me like that.

Stahp....

A BOTL on another forum recently posted some pics of some terrible fake Padrons that were purchased while traveling in Nic. I would exercise extreme caution when choosing a vendor.

I've heard several brothers mention a few years back that purchasing from the airport is your best bet. Maybe things have changed since then.

Been to Nicaragua three times last year. The sticks at the airport - a Padron kiosk and a small walk-in in the duty free with mainly CyB, and other Joya de Nicaragua lines. No real deals though, prices are at about MSRP. Not sure about Esteli, it's pretty far from Managua and Granada where I stay. In Granada there are a couple of pretty good small producers, my two favorites are Mumbacho who sell their cigars for around $90 a box in house vs. their online international store where they are greatly marked up. The other affordable quality option is Doña Elba cigars. They just started making a sun grown version that's pretty tasty. Both shops are in Granada. Good luck on your quest!

You will find better prices online than in Nicaragua. I also saw the counterfeit Padrons at the airport.

Thank you for the info. I will have them check those places out.

I got a La Gran Joya de Nicaragua from a friend, who bought it in a tourist shop in Granada. It tasted very good, and I'm curious to find out where I can buy them. Have you any idea? This cigar is not from the well known Joya de Nicaragua Antaño (company from 1970), but I liked it more.

This is spot on.  They also sell cellophane bundled packs in the "markets" and you can get good prices on those but they are not high quality... they were good cigars to smoke while I was fishing though.

In the airport at Managua they do have a decent selection of cigars and they also had a guy rolling cigars there too, so that was kind of neat to see... I bought a box and he rolled two "Free" ones for me.

The airport is not the best price point to buy rum FYI... nor the liquor stores in the middle of the tourist city. Get on the outskirts and prices drop.
