Rye
The guy is an idiot. While I have nothing against who smokes what, people in respectable positions should portray a healthy lifestyle. Save it for your breaks and downtime, and quit trying to prove a moot point!
oliverdst
So they want him to choose what is more important: his job or health? This is awkward. I agree that this in not the image police wants but if it's legal it's not police business.
CanuckSARTech
Unfortunately, most of it comes down to (not) following orders from the chain of command. Other than that....

As an outsider I have to agree. You wear the uniform you need to uphold the chain of command. It would be nice if we supported our own better though, It seems to me as an outsider we are letting many uniformed people down these days. We have asked ALLOT of those who serve these days and our politicians do not seem to support there actions and the results of of what they ask of them. I hope this improves soon. I appreciate that thought. As an insider, trust me - that definitely rings home. But, changes or not, those who "sign on the dotted line", be it for military, police, fire, or other emergency services, have to understand and agree to all that's asked of them. Do your homework ahead of time, and if you don't agree, don't sign up. In this example specifically, whether pot is legalized as a medical item or not, there are internal (and external) policies in place, and you have to follow them. I have absolutely nothing against people who indulge in MaryJane, especially for medical reasons. It seems however that he can pick a time to smoke that wouldn't be offensive to his peers, superiors or the public.
