Cuba trip

Recommended Posts

Do a search on this site for the latest prices in Cuba. Don't know what they are going for now. I went in October, '12 and I know prices have increased since then so can't help much. But convert your USD's to Euro's before you leave. The exchange rate is better, I think, or at least it was then. I never could figure out exactly what the exchange was going from USD to Euro and then converting those in Cuba to CUC's. There are websites you can google that will tell you what it will be. Be careful when you get to Cuba and start converting your Euro's to CUC's. Make sure they have given you the proper exchange before you leave the desk.

There are members here who have gone many times and can help more than I.

Do not bring US currency as they charge 10% extra conversion. The CUC used to be pegged to 1.1 US. They accept Canadian money. Make sure you get bills without wrinkles as they may reject old or wrinkled money.

Check the web site Cubajunky for tips for the trip.

YUL cigars has a good price list in Cuba with the new rates if known.

Franko, you don't say where you are from, if from Canada don't convert your money over to Euros and then over to CUC. You would be losing money on both conversions. Like the others say just take Canadian dollars.

Where you stay depends on your likes. I have stayed at Casa Particulares and enjoyed the experience. Some homes are set up so you are separate from the family and others you eat and socialize with the family. You maybe able to find one with an independent entrance but in general you cannot have guests in your room without their names being recorded. In 2011 I stayed in Havana in Central Havana for $20.00 a night. I was a 5 minute walk to the center of old Havana. In the Casas the family makes sure your stuff is safe to avoid issues with the authorities. The family will also offer to cook meals for you and I found many places had better food than restaurants.

Avoid unlicensed Casa Particulares as the theft if more likely and the police are less likely to help.
