A Hot Toddy is by far my favourite winter drink and i thought i'd share my experience with the forum on how to make one.

I usually drink Hot Toddys to relax or get warm before going to bed when feeling a bit run down with the flue, to ease a cough or a cold and to be honest, mostly because i love the flavours of it.

I've tried a variation of different bases, spices and alcohols and to me, the simplest ones work best.

Here's a list of bases, spices and alcohols that you can use to experiment with and see what works best for you.

Base: Tea,coffee,Hot chocolate, Water with a wedge of lime.

Spices: Cinnamon sticks, cloves, aniseed, nutmeg. Basically any sweet spice that you like.

Alcohol: Brandy, whiskey, rum, spiced rum, cognac, port. Dark spirits work really well but again, you can go wild and try whatever spirit that you like.

I add honey to all my hot toddys too.

My recipe of choice:

Black tea, long shot of French brandy and a teaspoon of honey. I add cinnamon to this recipe from time to time.

Simply brew your black tea, add the brandy and the honey and enjoy.

I think this combination is simply perfect. The smell of brandy combined with honey is beautiful and black tea adds balances to the recipe. Not too sweet, not too harsh and smells great.

Planning on having one with a nice Cigar over the weekend which i never tried before!

Enjoy responsibly peace.gif

Cheers Greg :)

I'll be having a few due to a bad case of flue but no cigars unfortunately :(

Sounds pretty tasty. A couple of years ago, I tried hot buttered rum for the first time and it was gross. This seems infinitely better.

I used to bartend, and the way we did it (I dunno if it's a Great Lakes' style / Canadian style, but it works) is like this:

  • hot water
  • lemon bar mix
  • hint of cinnamon (a whole cinnamon stick in it for a stir stick is best)
  • shot of vodka
  • shot of brandy
  • teaspoon of honey

Should taste and smell just like NeoCitran, as that's essentially the OTC / alcohol free / big-pharma take on the ages-old Hot Toddy as the classic cold-and-flu remedy.

I just go down to the local liquer store and grab a container out of their freezer. I have always had mine with egg in it so it gives it a creamy custard top that is sweet with the nutmeg. Around here they call it Tom and Jerry mix.
