Good evening everyone,

Got a question for the Ozzie aficionados in the forum: I am living in Hong Kong and will be visiting Sydney and Melbourne for one week respectively in late July. I assume it's not going to be the time of year to enjoy a cigar outdoors.

Anyone got any suggestions as to where to have a decent smoke? I understand the hotels in down under are pretty much smoke free nowadays...

Appreciate your guidance.

All the best,

Reto

You can still smoke at Cohi Bar, was there about 6 weeks ago. You can pretty much smoke at any bar, as long as they have a designated outdoor area (eg a beer garden). Restaurants with outdoor areas normally allow smoking, but it is polite to ask first. Some won't allow smoking until after 10pm as it disturbs other diners.

The weather has been pretty good the last couple of days. Nice sunny winter days are great cigar smoking weather. Head down to Darling Harbour, King St Wharf, or The Rocks and enjoy the harbour views.

It's a really nice place with a beautiful view. Wish I tried cohi bar but alas I was at one of the restaurants below for breakfast.

Check out Barranows in Hawthorne while in Melbourne.

They're got a VERY well stocked bar a well stocked humidor and you're permitted to smoke indoors.

Seeing as its winter there atm thats a serious plus

Yep, Barranows in Hawthorne is great.

I tend to go to RA Lounge more because it's in the CBD, but it's only opend from 6:00pm and is closed on Mondays.

There's also club 23 at Crown Casino which as a nice outdoor area.

Hi Reto,

Just have a quick look in the cigar friendly locations sub forum for some places you might wanna try. In general Fuzz is right that most places will have a smoking area and if its well ventilated its normally not an issue.

Dont know where you are going to stay but here are some options (some i am repeating)

* Darling Harbour area - Cohi Bar

* The Rocks/Circular Quay - Hemisphere Bar (bit pricey and upmarket)

* Chinatown/Townhall - The Cuban place

Enjoy Australia and make sure you try Vegemite on toast with coffee for breakfast at least once during your stay, any coffee shop will have it.

Also remember if you are bringing your own cigars, customs here doesn't allow to much. Someone will provide the exact details or you can check online but in general rule of thumb would be around 5 robusto size cigars would be no issue.

Hi Everyone,

Many thanks for your kind suggestions! Will definitely try some of them.

Kam: I do know Vegemite as there are some Ozzies working at my office... Reminds me of the story of a Chinese friend who went to boarding school in New Zealand. For the breakfast there was Vegemite on the tables and the first time she thought it was chocolate spread and put a healthy load on her toast. First bite was a bit of a surprise...

Happy smoking,

Reto

Vegemite for most people is an acquired taste. True, make sure they don't put to much on for you first time round.

The UN should ban Vegemite, Marmite, Aussiemite and all other varieties of this vile, biological hazard. The only thing worse than eating this disgusting paste, is drinking it dissolved in hot water! surprised.gifno.gif

Yeah it's full of B vitamins, but if you seriously need that much, be merciful on you taste buds and swallow a pill or get shots!!

What's wrong with you Fuzz. Vegimite rocks!

Don't know about dissolving it in water and drinking it. Never head about that before. I would much rather eat it on toast :).

As a biological weapon, yes. As a spread for your toast, hell no!

Some people drink it in hot water as a substitute for Bovril... and that stuff is pretty foul to begin with.
