Steens Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 Hi , Sheryl and I are visiting Melbourne from Wed to Sun and keen to know any great places to smoke a few cigars. We are in Adelaide from the 9th to the 18th also and if you have any tips for where we should go for that great smoke or if anyone is keen to catch up, I'd love to hear from you! Cheers Paul
rsanz Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 All I know of is The Supper Club in central Melbourne and plan to visit it when I'm over there next week. I want to buy one of those crazy GI olive drab banded cigars the Aussies are getting.
TheBaron Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 There's also Baranows Lounge in Hawthorn (great, relaxed feel) and RA in the city. Few and far between unfortunately...
AndrewNR Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 In Adelaide?.. I never found anywhere good for cigars while I lived there.. There is a small group of guys that meet at a pub occasionally for a decent meal and a stoogie, some of which are members here. There's some great food and parks there though :-p Depends what your into.
sengjc Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 There's is a bar/lounge called RA Lounge which is connected to a bar/dining place called Collins Quarter in the Melbourne CBD. It is a cigar friendly place with a smoking lounge upstairs and an outdoor beer garden downstairs. Every first Saturday of the month, there is usually a cigar event from 5:30pm until late where you can herf with other Melburnians who are members of this cigar forum and others. If you contact this forum's member: mftan, he will be able to provide further information on this event.
sengjc Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 I think you will need to pay an entry fee to smoke in Baranows. They are in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn near Swinburne University and the Glenferrie Train Station or you can taxi from the CBD, it is an inner city suburb after all. It is a nice cosy place though, lots of leather chairs and the like. They also have a well stocked bar with a wide selection of fine spirits: single malts, aged rum, small batch vodka etc. Incidentally, Ben who is the son of Wal (the proprietor of Baranows) is the Australian distributor for Diplomatico rum, one of the finest rums you can get, in my honest opinion.
sengjc Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 Melbourne Supper Club in the CBD is a nice place too with a rooftop bar but I think the place is better in summer. They do have gas heaters but it does get chilly up there from the wind. It is quite upmarket with a comprehensive vintaged wine list, fine cognac and armagnac as well as a good selection of European beers on tap.
sengjc Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 BTW, cigars are available for sale at these Melbourne joints but if you can bring your own, you will save quite a bit. Most people bring their own anyway. The money you save on cigars can then be used on drinks or food.

Last I was at Baranows no entry fee? Was 12 months ago, unless its changed. Always good manners to either buy a cigar or hit of whisky when you arrive anyway. Always great service, and the basic membership which was free gave 10% discount on cigars and whisky. As mentioned above great cozy place to smoke, always enjoyed the service at Baranows
polarbear Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 I was in Barranows last month There is no entry fee and you can bring your own cigars as long as you plan to buy drinks from the bar Be warned, last time i was in Barranows stocks were fairly low thanks to the members cleaning them out and the limited range of cigars now available thanks to plain packaging. Everything they have is great but if you want something specific it might pay to BYO Also, RA Bar in Collins quarter is not open on a Monday
Tan1801 Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 I think Seng has pretty much covered off all the venues. Like others have said Baranows no longer has entry fees. The only other place I can think of is Tuscan Bar. They have a rooftop bar section and are in between RA Lounge and Supper Club. PM me if your keen to meet up. I'm always up for a quick smoke or two.
Wil Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 Definitely go to Siglo (the bar above Supper Club) when you're in Melbourne. You can take your own smokes (LCDH about 5 minutes walk away) and the view out onto Parliament House/Spring Street is great.

Our Melbourne meet up the last time Rob and Lisa were in town (2011) was held at Siglo and it's a brilliant venue. Great view.
sengjc Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 I haven't been to Baranows in a long time so you guys must be right that they no longer charge entry fees. I do have some member card of sorts which I got for free though. Sad to hear the plain packaging has affected their stock levels, they used to have an excellent selection of hard to fine and ultra premiums available by the stick. ...The only other place I can think of is Tuscan Bar. They have a rooftop bar section and are in between RA Lounge and Supper Club... Went to Tuscan's once when ol'Scotty was visiting from Perth. It was ok but I'd rather Siglo Bar which is the rooftop bar of the Melbourne Supper Club. BTW Matt, Scotty's planning on coming over again in August. Interested?
Steens Posted June 5, 2013 Author Posted June 5, 2013 Hey guys thanks for your time and suggestions mftan i'll PM you once i sort how to use it !
AntiVirus Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 There isn't a whole lot in Adelaide to be honest, not that I know of anyway. Many pubs in the CBD have outside areas, nothing special though. The place we've been having small herfs at is 5-10 mins outside the city at a pub(Walkers Arms) which has a nice beer garden/seated area with some undercover seating and heaters. I might be available for a smoke send me a pm if you would like to organise something.
