Still being a novice in cigar smoking, I have been trying to sample as many vitolas and brands as possible. Since I currently don't have any means to get my hands on custom cigars, I was wondering if you feel like you are getting your money's/trouble's worth in terms of consistency, brilliance etc. when you try custom cigars. I am mainly curious because I see people choosing to buy regular production cigars like D4s over customs when they come back from Cuba. Frankly, I feel like I'd mainly buy custom cigars if I can ever go there.

So, to put it simply: Do you pick up custom cigars simply because you can or do/would you go to Cuba specifically to get them?

It really comes to personal preference at the end. For example my favorites are Santos and Luis Hector customs, they have their own unique "house flavors" that I cannot find in regular productions.

Would I grab a few bundle from them while I am in Cuba? For sure! Will I pay a premium for them back at home in Canada? Probably not.

NO! Move along, nothing to see! sneaky.gifinnocent.gif I enjoy customs a lot. Getting them down in Cuba is part of the fun. You get to meet the rollers, chat with them, etc. A few wise men on this forum told me....you can grab regular production cigars, RE's, LE's anywhere online. When in Cuba, smoke the rolls and bring those back with you. Those are the cigars you'll remember and cherish most. I've enjoyed many of Hamlets cigars, Monsdales, Reynaldos and Santos. I had a Santos 109 last November that was amazing. Sadly, I did not pick many up. He is now retired and I regret it. A tough but well learned lesson. Get them while you can, when you can.

This. Exactly. Nothing more to add.

It depends on the tobacco the roller can access. Taboada & Hamlet had the best, the roller cranking them out in the hotel lobby probably not. Cigars I got from the two rollers mentioned are some other the best I've ever smoked. Other can be average at best. And personally I love fresh custom rolls. I'll usually smoke them within the first year & certainly by the second.

I personally have been happy with the ones I have gotten and have gone deep on them for that reason. Also the price i've been able to get them for has made them more than worth it for me. In fact I'm smoking one right now :)

Agreed with the this. Expensive and overpriced like all cigars at Canadian retail prices, but at regular Cuba pricing, well worth it.

I wouldn't agree 100%. When we had rollers here at the LCDH, the pricing for the rolls were well below what regular production sticks cost. Coronas were $15. Robustos $20. Piramides $25. Those were cash prices, no taxes. That is not bad considering what a Monte 2 would cost you vs a Custom torpedo. Of course, the pricing in Cuba, was far below that. :)

What cigars enter in the custom roll category? I mean I went to Cuba once and I smoked my first cigar there. I was in Vinales and there is a barn when they make and sell cigars. I bought my first cigar there for 1$ and bam! fell in love with cigars. My gf now hates my new hobby even if she takes a puff or two once in a while. She is always reminding about that first cigar and how she find it was the best one I had and that she could taste banana, chocolate, cofee and all... Anyways that's my little story! But what I mean is how can you know those famous custom rollers? Where do we find them? Does the Vinales barn is the home of famous custom roller?

Customs are pretty much any cigar that is not put into a Habanos SA box, stamped and sealed. :) Rolls from the farm are referred to as "farmies". Nothing wrong with those cigars at all. The "famous" rollers tend to be situated at various LCDH's in Havana. Hamlet can be found at the RyJ factory store. Santos was at the Commodoro. Yolanda was at the Melia Habana, etc. I don't have the best recollection of who is where but in general they are at the LCDH's. They often roll for the festivals as well. Last years Partagas Festivals cigars were primarily rolled by La China and Hamlet.

This advice is spot on. While in Cuba, grab hard to find smokes and customs. Regular production will find its way into your humidor over time. Customs are difficult to come by anywhere outside of Cuba as people offer such for trade/sell much less often.

Custom smokes have been some of my favorite, and I highly encourage you to smoke many while in Havana.

I said "wise men" not smartass.giftantrum.giflaugh.png

Uh huh. I remember that conversation.

I also remember the constant questions throughout.

And of course....the sweating and nervous panting on the flight home too! :D

Just teasin', bud. It's all part of the experience, and we're all glad to share the info back and forth. :buddies:

Is there a way to get around the Limit Cuba sets on how many custom rolls you can leave the counrty with?

I think its only 25 (or maybe 50) that you can leave with if you dont have a reciept and you dont get reciepts for custom rolls.

As i've never been there i defer to the knowledge of the board but i know if i was there i'd be buying A LOT of custom rolls and leaving the reg prod stuff alone
