pjansen Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Hey guys I'm looking to start trying rum with cigars. What do you guys suggest are good starting points in the rum world? Thanks for the help!
Colt45 Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 My favorite all around rum is Gosling's black seal. I also enjoy the Zacapa 23, Cruzan amber, Privateer amber, Bully Boy.

Colt45 Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Are these readily available in the states or do I need to order online? Yes, the Gosling, Zacapa, and Cruzan should be readily available pretty much everywhere. The Privateer and Bull Boy are more local to me (northeast US), but might be found as well.
stargazer14 Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 He was looking for 'starting points', thats why I mentioned cake , but the rums mentioned above are very nice. Havana Club from Cuba is good but a bit hard to come by in the states. You start on those rums mentioned (Zacapa is probably my favorite) and you will be spoiled for sure.

Ok I will try to find some of those brands and try them out. what is the best way to aquire Havana Club in the states? Just bring it back from another country or order online?
CanuckSARTech Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 My favorite all around rum is Gosling's black seal. I also enjoy the Zacapa 23, Cruzan amber, Privateer amber, Bully Boy. Bleeeaaahhhh!!!! That's not rum! That's liquid varnish with all sorts of nasty additives and herbal / spice mixtures, with a HINT of rum for the alcohol content! LOL. J/k. But man, I know a lot of people like this stuff, and I keep on trying it, but I find it's about as far as you can go from somewhat traditional rum. Kinda like saying Tequila Rose would go into a tasting of starter's tequilas. LOL. Either way, I'd recommend to buy a SMALL bottle of it (I ended up giving away a huge bottle of it since it didn't favour me). Hey guys I'm looking to start trying rum with cigars. What do you guys suggest are good starting points in the rum world? Thanks for the help! Other recommendations as given are great. Ron Zacappa Centario 23 is a phenomenal rum. Stay away from most Bacardi or Captain Morgan's stuff, with the perhaps exception of Captain Morgan Private Stock (I also have a soft spot for Captain Morgan Tattoo). Other recommendations would also be El Dorado 15 year, Havana Club Anejo 7 Anos (hard to get in the 'States, but maybe hit up a Canadian buddy of yours for help), Ron Santiago, and Ron Barcelo Gran Anejo.
tmac77 Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Either way, I'd recommend to buy a SMALL bottle of it (I ended up giving away a huge bottle of it since it didn't favour me). Was that given away or you Keithed yourself and regurgitated it?
CanuckSARTech Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Was that given away or you Keithed yourself and regurgitated it? Oh gawd, given away. I won't get KeithedTM on it if I have to get physically ill to drink it in the first place!
jacktarnold Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I'm definitely a fan of Zacapa 23 but I have to say I am really enjoying Zaya 12 yr. it has a very strong Carmel flavor and is very nice.
brazoseagle Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Zaya 12!!!! Great Price, Excellent Rum!!!!
stargazer14 Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 As far as Havana goes, you can order it but its expensive to have shipped to the states and not worth the cost, bring a bottle back if you go to Mexico. But its not the best rum to get started with. Try the Zacapa and you will be hooked on good rum.
persianpirate Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 So glad someone posted about this. I have always like rum, but trying to expand my tastes. Ive looked locally for Zacapa in southern california & only found one place that carries it. I do come by Flor de Cana a lot. What are people's experiences? The aged bottles seem to be either 7 year or 18 year. Thanks!
SurpriseMVP Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Glad someone mentioned Zaya. I like Zacapa, but for the price I would stick to Zaya. As far as HC goes the 7 tastes the best to me, but honestly use HC as a mixer. Flor de Cana 12 year is pretty good too. Next time I get to California I plan in finding some Diplomatico. Can't get it where I live.
stargazer14 Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Zaya is a good alternative to Zacapa I think. As far as readily available rum Bacardi 8yr is nice, as is Matusalem Gran Reserva, but for some reason they are no longer selling that in PA. (I did stock up when the state run stores were clearing out on it for $12 a bottle tho!) Cant comment on the Flor de Cana but someone will I'm sure....
Wil Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Zacapa 23 is great - if a little sweet. It's also relatively expensive for rum. For someone starting out (and assuming you aren't mixing it), I would suggest: - Bacardi 8 - a nice smooth rum with hints of vanilla. Goes great with cigars because it is quite light and smooth. Don't let the fact that it's a 'Bacardi' put you off! - Mt G.a.y XO - exceptional value. A deep, complex rum. I find it a little bold with lighter bodied cigars. It has a 'prickliness' or peppery sensation on the tongue (not heat) that can be a little overpowering. - Havana Club Anejo Reserva and 8 YO - these two are quite different, but both are lighter cuban style rums. Both go great with cigars. - Appleton 12 Estate Extra - I find it quite full bodied and a little sweet (although not like Zacapa). There are plenty more to explore. Personally, I keep HC Anejo Reserva and HC 8 on hand as they go beautifully with cigars. I find that too much age and refinement can detract from rum's true character, which I find really appealing. Let us know how you go!
pjansen Posted January 24, 2013 Author Posted January 24, 2013 Just picked up a bottle of Bacardi 8. I will try it tonight with a cigar and see how it goes. What marca is best to match with Bacardi 8?
bstarrs Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 You can't go wrong with Mount *** XO, Zacapa 23, or El Dorado 12. You should also try Appleton Reserve and if you'd like something that's great and really cheap just grab some 5 year off Flor De Cana.
Wil Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Just picked up a bottle of Bacardi 8. I will try it tonight with a cigar and see how it goes. What marca is best to match with Bacardi 8? Nice. I wouldn't worry too much about the marca - just something medium to full bodied. Anything lighter and I gravitate toward white wine, champagne/sparkling or beer (something light, like a pilsner).
Ken Gargett Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Just picked up a bottle of Bacardi 8. I will try it tonight with a cigar and see how it goes. What marca is best to match with Bacardi 8? bacardi 8 is, for me, the best of their rums. there have been several threads on rums with many recommendations. if you can work the search thing (never works for me) then you should find them.
ubiquito Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 I am a big fan of the entire El Dorado line from the 12yr up to the 21yr with the 15 probably slightly edging out the 21 for my fave.
