Frofro Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Hi All I've been searching threads on the forum for Calvados references, and whilst there are a few positive mentions, there is very little specific discussion. So I'm going to make a stab at it... I like Calvados because... there is plenty of variety of brand and vintages I'm a big fan of Normandy it doesn't attract the kind of snobbery and oneupmanship that go along with some of the other better known spirits the price: even a 30-40 yr old calvados can be had relatively reasonably it makes a brilliant brandy butter my personal favourites... Dupont 1989 Chateau de Breuil 15 yr old Lemorton 25 yr old (a Domfrontais aoc, with a proportion of pears along with the apples) An absolute preference, so far, would be pays d'auge aoc over the domfrontais What say you?
orangedog Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Every now and then I re-venture out into the world of port, brandy, and cognac just to see if my tastes have changed. I'm typically not a fan of those, but since you mention it, I will look for one of your favorites (or favourites) and report back.
tmac77 Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 I have tried a Canadian version of Calvados it's quite nice. Can't find it easily though only in quebec abd BC as far as I know.
Frofro Posted January 15, 2013 Author Posted January 15, 2013 There's also an English version I've seen, from Somerset, so if the Somerset cider doesn't make you blind, there's always the apple brandy to fall back on...very interested to hear that Canada is taking this noble tradition of turning fruit into rocket fuel onwards.
khomeinist Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Nice idea for thread. I have tried many over the years. I wanted to learn how to cook with Calvados. Will start seeking out what is available locally and posting notes. I used to drink a lot of a Pommeau that was a mix of Calvados and unfiltered apple juice. Good stuff chilled. http://www.calvados-dupont.com/en/pommeau.htm
