I have a 400 count humidor that I built about 6 months ago. I have an Oasis in it and all has been great for 6 months. Since the arrival of the cold weather in NYC, the ambient humidity has dropped to roughly 35%-45%. My humidor has been spot on at 67%, however, as of late with the low humidity I hear the Oasis running very frequently. It seems to be kicking on and off every 2 minutes or so. Humidity still good but Oasis laboring.

I have been reading the kitty litter accounts as of late and decided to give it a try.

I went to a local WalMart and for $3.97 I purchased 8 lbs of non-scented silica cat litter and for $3.50 bought a nylon mesh laundry bag.

Upon arriving home, I poured approx. 1lb of litter into bag and sprayed to whole thing with about 5 oz of distilled water. I placed it on the top shelf of my humidor, and did not heard the Oasis once. I then totally took the Oasis out of the humidor for 12 hours and my humidity stood at a constant 68%.

For a grand total of about $8 my humidor is exactly where I want it and my expensive Oasis (which I put back in the humidor) is again at rest.

If anyone is having the same problems that I was I would encourage you to try this cheap but effective solution.

Merry Christmas to all.

I have been looking into this for a tupperdor project of mine. Sounds like I will now. Cheers for sharing!

I will take a few pics and attach them. The bag was a "Tide" bag and the cat litter was white and blue, however, no scent what so ever. The brand name was "Mini Litter" and it says on the label that it is "porous silica sand". I bought everything at WalMart.

So far so good with the litter I got from WalMart, I am staying at a steady 68%. Unscented with blue crystals. I'm sure that the humidity beads work just as well. If the litter fails me I will switch to beads as well. For now the cost between the litter and beads is huge. I paid less then $4 for 8 lbs.

Kitty litter is the bomb ! I've been using it for a couple of years and it keeps a constant humidity of between 65 - 67 %. It's cheap and really effective. I don't use a mesh bag though..... I stole a couple of my wife's stockings and cut them up !

Can you please post the brand name and description of the one you got at Walmart. I can't find non scented, when I did a search.

Thanks

The brand that I got from WalMart was called "Mini Litter"". It also says "porous silica sand" on the bag, blue and white crystals.
