Jose Marquina, who spoke with El Nuevo Herald and claims "firsthand sources and information" about Castro's health, described the former leader's condition as "very close to a neurovegetative state." Castro is reportedly incapacitated, and "has trouble feeding, speaking and recognizing faces," Marquina said. Rumors about the former dictator's supposedly failing health have surged in recent weeks. On Oct. 11, Venezuelan journalist Nelson Bocaranda said his death was imminent. Cuban state media released a statement on Wednesday that was purportedly written by Castro. According to The Miami Herald: Castro is in his home in El Laguito, Havana, receiving constant and specialized medical care, Marquina said. The idea of the Cuban authorities and Castro’s family is to maintain him alive and far from public view, the doctor said. 'He could last weeks like that, but what I can say is that we’ll never again see him in public,' said Marquina in a telephone interview from Naples. The one-time revolutionary's last public appearance was in March, when he had an audience with Pope Benedict XVI.
CaptainQuintero Posted October 19, 2012 Author Posted October 19, 2012 Slightly off toppic but his home in El Laguito: as in the factory? I'm assuming they mean the suberb?
AlohaStyle Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Wow, I can only imagine how Cuba will be whenever he passes away. I am definitely looking forward to my first visit next month during the Partagas Festival and I can only imagine how crazy but yet historic it would be to be there when it happens. And yes El Laguito as the neighborhood. You should do a Google Satelite Maps viewing of the area... pretty impressive overhead view of some nice places.

Yeah, that's my idea of a good time, being there when he jumps the fence and everything comes to a standstill for a few days or a week .... hope to be well stocked then. His residential compound is in the Jaimanitas neighbourhood of Havana, way past EL. EL is the diplomatic mansion area.
Guest rob Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Surely Raul will keep law & order and have the civilians maintaining allegiance?
Nino Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Surely Raul will keep law & order and have the civilians maintaining allegiance? Yeah, maintain law & order, keep the music down, and the partying & celebrating not too obvious, fun times .... First thing I'll do is stock up the fridge in the casa. My Italian buddy and casa-mate Renzo, a blessed cook, takes Spaghettis, Parmigiano and food stores along, his cooking utensils are already in HAV and I am taking a few pounds of Barilla pasta, no worries, all points covered
cottierm Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 For all of you going to Havana in a few weeks time, good luck! That said, to be there when (if) he dies will be quite something to experience, I'm jealous. Best, Michel
rckymtn22 Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Not the first time we have heard he is near-death or dead. Will believe it when I see him in a casket.
brazoseagle Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Last week when he asked me if I could fly in and cook him a steak, I knew it wasn't a good idea! Very few can handle that level of Steaksperience. However, he did sign a waiver.....so I'm good.
CanuckSARTech Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Huh. Interesting. A few thoughts.... Firstly, Art, when we go there, can we stop in at Fi's place when we go to E.L.? I wanna bring him some Cadbury Creme Eggs. And come Canuck beer... Ummm....pending how things go with this....should I be armed for this trip???!!? Nino, when it all goes to hell, I'm crashing at your pad! I know you'll have TONS more than just pasta stocked up there!!!!
Nino Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 His residential compound is in the Jaimanitas neighbourhood of Havana, way past EL. EL is the diplomatic mansion area. Further clarification : http://www.havanatimes.org/?p=80691 The house in Laguito Shortly before Jose Marquina, a Venezuelan doctor who also lives in Florida, said he knew firsthand from a good source that the Comandante had suffered “a cerebral embolism and now he doesn’t know anybody.” The information he was spreading lacked such seriousness that it placed this dying Fidel Castro in his “house in El Laguito,” when he actually resides in another part of town. Fidel has never lived in El Laguito, since the houses there are normally used as protocol residences. To top it all off, a supposed Italian journalist, Tommaso Debenedetti, set himself the task of spreading the news of Fidel’s death on social networks, sparking off a craze that even the professional media found difficult to avoid. From a fake Twitter account, Debenedetti made it appear that the Cuban foreign minister issued a message about a special public appearance by Raul Castro to announce that “Fidel Castro died today,” while adding that “an official communiqué from the Central Committee will be released in the coming hours.”
CaptainQuintero Posted October 22, 2012 Author Posted October 22, 2012 It does seem a pretty strange vegetative state!
Dara Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 Nino, I'll bring whiskey if you and Renzo will swap some pasta for it!!!!
mazolaman Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/oct/22/fidel-castro-media-rumours-health A link to Fidel's rebuke on this. Surely, if he was in a vegetative state, he would be reading the Daily Mail.
Nino Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 Nino, I'll bring whiskey if you and Renzo will swap some pasta for it!!!! Dara : Bought some stock yesterday of Barilla Penne Rigate, Tortiglioni, Fusilli and Gemelli, 2 kgs in all, let me know your favourite and I try to keep a portion for you, but it will be hard ... no need for Whiskey, Santiago is good !
