2008 Edicion Limitada Montecristo Sublime

20120927_155159.jpg

This is a special cigar to me as this was the year that I got married in Las Vegas!!!!

I recently received one in a box pass and thought it would be a good way to spend the afternoon as technically, I was not smoking one from my stash that I smoke on my anniversary. :)

The cigar itself is a Sublime vitola. It comes in at a 54 ring gauge and is 6.5 inches long.

The cigar is very toothy. The wrapper is a darkened, leathery brown. A daunting looking stick. A good amount of time is going to be needed today.

The construction is decent. Squeeze test shows that it is slightly underfilled.

Hope that this doesn't pose any draw issues.

The foot of the cigar shows otherwise. Looks fairly packed.

The aroma from the wrapper is pure cocoa with a hint of earthiness and a slight woody smell to it.

The triple cap looks good. Should be an easy entry for the punch...

The draw is very loose. Much looser than I expected. Almost like a wind tunnel. I hope that it tightens up as I smoke the cigar.

Cocoa, woodiness, cream and a hint of dark sugar off the cold draw.

Time to take this to the flame....

First Third

A wave of woodiness, earth and bitter chocolate hit me off the get go. It's like I took a bite out of a forest floor. A hint of pine in there for good measure. Strong off the bat. The woodiness and bitter chocolate are really at the forefront.

Starts off as a full on medium bodied smoke. A little surprised at this.

The burn starts off a little wonky. Based on the sheer girth of this cigar, the burn should correct itself.

The draw is loose. Almost too easy. Would like to have seen a little resistance on this. Might make the cigar smoke quicker though.

The ash is a 'Dirty' White. Not many grey tones at alll.

The strength has subsided a bit. No harshness at all. More creamy now, combined with pine, cocoa and leather. Much nicer, it's like the 'funk' has blown off and the flavours are more with it now.

Not much sweetness going on with the first third. Bolder than I remember.

This thing is blowing off a lot of smoke. WOW!!!! Very impressive. The good thing about a loose draw is that you really can take long, expansive pulls from the cigar.

Second Third

This is burning quick. The loose draw contributes to long pulls but I can't help myself as the flavours are quite nice.

Reminds me of a nice cappucino with a good crema top. Cream, cocoa, expresso are in play and combine with pine and leather.

The flavours are very pronounced. Still an absence of sweetness. I am guess that the wrapper doesn't have as much influence due to the ring gauge. Flavours are fuller, more earthier and bold. I like this.

There is a slight bitterness in the after finish. A little bite to it. Lots of woodiness and cream as well.

The aroma of the cigar reminnds me of fall. Crisp, clean, calming. Very nice.

Final Third

I think this is the fastest I've ever smoked a Sublime vitola before. The good news is that there is no harshness or nicotine buildup.

Spoke too soon. Starting to get a tar flavour now. Doesn't combine well with the woody, creamy, bitter chocolate taste. Offputing. Hope it goes away.

Burn is getting a little wonky. Time for a touchup.

Starting to slow down between puffs to see if the harsh tar flavours go away. Got to try something.

Still lots of smoke firing out of this thing.

Flavours have come back into focus. The cream, bitter chocolate and woody combination has regained its position on the flavour profile. The leather note is starting to become more pronounced though...

Strength picks up slightly as the leather note starts to make a move to the forefront. Every once in awhile, a blast of tar to remind me to slow down hits my palate with the subtlety of a jack hammer.

Final Impressions

This was stronger than I anticipated. No evident of sweetness at all throughout the smoke.

Would have liked to see the draw a bit tighter. Looks like the roller had an off day.

Having said that, the flavours were very pronounced and bolder than I thought they would be. It was nice to see that the strength has increased over time. I would say to a nice medium/full bodied category.

Nice mixture of flavours as well, with the exception of the tar notes at the end. That might be due to my quick smoking though.

These are evolving nicely. Will revisit in May 2013....

Maybe we need to have a post just about amazing these pics are! The pic of the foot, ... Wow! I know I'm not the only one that looks for your posts for the cigar porn to follow... The reviews are great too! Wonderful job. What kind of camera do you use? So crisp

Love these cigars - have a dozen boxes hidden away ... will be one of the greats.

These used to be sweet young. The dark wrapper had more influence, just like the Mag 48.

Agreed. When I smoked them when they first came out, there was a sweetness that came with the flavour profile. Not the case now.

Thanks for the compliment. I use my Samsung Galaxy III to take all my pictures. My settings are set to macro and auto flash. That's all I know how to do. LOL
