I will reply, although i am no expert on the subject matter.

I would say that almost any wine fridge could be used as a cigar humidor.

What you need to do is condition it first so that it is running stable at the right temp and humidity before you put in any cigars. That may mean you need to have it off, to have it on, to have some fans, to plug the drain hole, to not plug the drain hole, to use some or a heap of beads etc. it may take a bit to work it out.. but that is half the fun

Not sure if this helps or not :rotfl:

I appreciate the response thanks. And that's very true I'm looking forward to the tinkering and getting it right.

I have not heard good things about the long lasting quality of Danby. my 2 cents, I don't like any thermoelectric units..It goes directly in the face of scientific efficiency.

Well what do you use? Thermoelectric doesn't remove humidity which is what we all desire... And compressor based systems can be modified to not remove as much humidity but most smaller appliances usually don't have a dial for that function you often get this by replacing control units.

We use one of these...we did not go out and buy it specifically. Matthew was given it by his corporate group for his birthday a few years ago and it was in our basement. We keep it there and it it is nice and cool there so we do not even plug it in.

Could be... to be honest we have never used it for wine. And it has been a long time since we got it and the packaging is long gone.

I'm in Texas, so even the best Thermoelectric Units are pointless. I use modified and customized compressor based units with commercial thermostat controls, that have yet to fail me in the areas of accuracy, efficiently and consistently maintained conditions. My units are kept at 65F/65rh and hold steady thought the year, but especially during the 112F summer days.

That's awesome, my buddy is a HVAC guy and modified a coke fridge that you'll see at different stores. If space was of unlimited supply I would have one myself.

Unfortunately, I'm going through this right now and it's definitely no fun. :thumbsdwn: I thought wine coolers would be as easy as put some beads/kitty litter in, then throw in your cigars. But nope, there's so much that goes into it, such as how is your ambient temp/RH, how much humidification you're using, etc. I still can't get a stable RH, and my temp is not too steady b/c my ambient temp is ~90-95 degrees in the summer.

It is going to be a bit of an experiment and a lot of research, and you're going to have to play around with it a lot. However, if you need a temp controlled unit, there's really no other "cheaper" options.

Let me preface this by saying, do whatever makes you happy, but my 2 cents: why invest so much money on a great collection of cigars, only to store them in the "cheaper option" ( your words).
