Nino Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 Sad to read, Rob, hope this helps ease your pain, regards Nino
Peter11216 Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 My condolences. He looked at me this morning and told me he had reached the end of his tether. No improvement to the paralysis of his hind legs after 10 days, he was wasting away both physically and mentally. One of the most beautiful things about Chesapeakes is that they will hold a conversation with you. This morning he went on for 30 seconds with his "woooooo...wooooo....wooooo..woooo" I asked him to try and load bear and I would give him a hand. Every day we try together. Today he looked at me and said no more. I sat down with him for an hour reminiscing and talking about the great days of retrieving in our beautiful country, the training, the playing cricket, learning how to get a cigar from the humidor, how he was a best mate to myself, my kids and my wife. I put him down shortly after, patting his head. Cheers mate.
aavkk Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 very sad to hear Rob, Cohiba must have been a really important part of the family. Surely he will be remembered for a long time to come.
GernBlansten Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 Rob, sorry for your loss. Just horrible. A friend sent us this poem when cancer took our Flat Coat two years ago: "Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together...." Author unknown.
El Presidente Posted June 27, 2012 Author Posted June 27, 2012 I would like to thank you one and all for your remarkable empathy. Tonight I head home after being interstate at the warehouse since Sunday, the day after I put him down. He would know the Diesel engine of the Jeep a kilometer away and meet me at the gate. Entering the gates he would every day brush past me...just touching...I would hop back in the car and drive up to the house. He would be at the door waiting for me. We would have a conversation and a rub of his head. He hoped I would be out at the home gym (on the deck) in a few minutes. When I would be he would be there as if spotting (no one needs to spot 60 kg...but hey...I appreciated the company !LOL!), At the end of the session I would throw a tennis ball into the acreage darkness. He would bolt. he was such a great retriever that if I actually threw the ball he would be back in 2 minutes...so I would hold it discretely behind my back. Once he had run his search patterns and after 20 minutes I would throw it deep when he wasn't looking. 2 minutes later, exhausted and elated he would be by my side. A quick goodnight. He was happy. I will miss him this evening. Yet, I know full well he is better off. Cheers again good people, you have made going home tonight bearable.
Dimmers Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 Sincere condolences to you and your family Rob. No truer friend than a dog.

davidl Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 sorry for your loss rob...i know how hard it can be losing a canine friend.
smpf67 Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 So Sorry Rob! It is so hard to lose a close friend like that. I've gone through that so many times, and it's never easy. Our last was less than 2 years ago (Molly, our Golden Retriever of 12 years). She was the same way till the very end, then told us it was time to put her down. Still very missed! Got our new Golden Murphy a year ago, and it truly helped ease the ache. Perhaps this will help... http://www.indigo.org/rainbowbridge_ver2.html
