H Upmann Royal Robusto

Sorry about the quality of the pics, I tried using the cell phone. That was a mistake. I’ve since picked up a camera so the next pics will be with that.

Anyways! Here is my first FOH review. I bought these in Varadero at the LCDH beside the beach when I was there in March. I lost my job in January, and got a job offer in mid march so I immediately booked a trip to Cuba while I still had some free time.

So on to the cigar. When I first came back from the trip one of my friends was looking over/admiring some of my cigars and somehow the RR he was looking at ended up with a bit of a gash in it. IMG00128-20120531-2110.jpg

Otherwise it was a nice looking parejo, some veins in the wrapper, which I would classify as Colorado Maduro. No hard or soft spots, and no major blemishes besides the one that was added by my friend. The draw gave a bit of resistance, not too much. I suspect the hole played in to it slightly, but was easily remedied by holding it there. The prelight flavours were minimal, but had hints of nuts and, of course, tobacco.

Once lit, the cigar gave off lots of white smoke, and burned rather evenly. Any burn issues were slight and quickly resolved themselves. No touch ups were required. Flavours were toasty, and with hints of spice. Milder spices, like nutmeg, and just general creaminess. As I got through the first third it reminded me of a mild gingerbread.

IMG00131-20120531-2131.jpgAs the second third begins some hints of mushrooms come in to my mind, and what was once a minute hint of green woodiness starts to come to the forefront. At times it seems like there are hints of red fruit? Could just be my imagination. The wood flavours begin to dominate the cigar, green oak and cedar come to mind. This cigar is definitely showing its youth.

The final third is dominated by wood, with occasional hints of burnt cocoa which eventually give way to leather.

Overall, I found this cigar quite interesting, and enjoyed it, but found it too young to fully enjoy at this point. Of course it will be more enjoyable without the gash in it, a few years to mellow out the greenness of this cigar will be great. I am thinking I will be buying some more boxes of these to enjoy in time.

Thanks for the review. I've only had one of these, and I found it to be medium-full, with lots of character. Reminded me a bit of the Mag 48 EL, but better IMO. These are quite approachable now, but should have the goods to age well.

Some studded winters for the Hyundai Genesis coupe. It needed them. It was terrible in snow. I've been meaning to find them a new hiding place but I just moved and am getting settled.
